Need a stump vice for an upcoming video, thought I'd check and see if anyone had on they aren't using before I go buy one.
That's a cool concept, learn new things all the time here. I tried laying the saw on my tailgate but it slips around. Better way is on a stump or big log and lay into the power head with your chest. But that isn't the most comfortable in the heavy snow we have. This does really interest me though as I switched to hand filing again.
I built this vise on a piece of 3/4 plywood so it's portable Clamp to a tail gate, atv rack .... etc Glued 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood together, drilled a hole & cut out a grove for the bar. piece of all thread, epoxied in a nut. drilled / tapped the end of the all thread, counter sink for a screw in a piece of aluminum for the vise jaw. Glue & screwed up from the bottom to mount it . Fits in the back seat of the P/U fine nice flat saw work table if need . Beats the heck out of working on the metal tailgate of the P/U. It sees a lot of use in the shop too, it gets oil & dirt all over it, carry it to the trash can or out side & clean it off.
Nice I've got a 2"x14"x24" rough sawn oak slab that I bolted a 6" vise to the end. Shove the other end into the recess on the side of the truck bed that the tailgate fits in when closed and you got a nice solid sharpening perch. That larger sheet of plywood would be nice working off an ATV rack though!
I'm going to build something that goes on the front rack of my quad to carry the saw, gas, and oil. I'm most likely going to use a toggle clamp to keep the saw contained during transport and sharpening. I've got a couple that I don't use much.
One like this? I have one somewhere I have used maybe twice. It works fine, I just rarely get the perfect stump to work from, and haven't had many big rounds when I need one. You want it, I'll find it.
I have a small tool box mounted on the front with extra chains and some random tools, rags, gloves, and glasses. My leather saw bag is in front of the milk crate. Has files, scrench, wedges, my measuring stick, and a tape. A milk crate for a small can of mix and a jug of bar oil (small can of mix isn't in there now), and the saw goes in the saw scabbard in the back. (Large gas can normally isn't on there)
Plywood cover for the atv rack is a good work surface. I screwed some stuff to it, crate, saw clamp Customize for you needs
I just take two rounds close in height one for your butt the other for the saw. Put a notch about 1/4 the depth of the bar and set the bar in the notch sit on the other round with the back of the power head between your legs. Works very very well and allows you to stabilize the saw and yourself.
You have tables to work on. I seen some of you pictures, close to one log loads from some of the stumps. Oregon stump vise , $20
Now there's a load right there… don't care who ya are… My lil ole JD tractor would end up a green n yellow smear under that big one… wow.
