Cut a small load of hickory. Fence row scrounge. Knew it had wire in it. Been awhile since I cut hickory, forgot how stringy it was.
Some nice looking splits. It'd be good to get wood with no stringiness attached, but it is what it is! I have a bunch of hickory rounds im cringing at the thought of hand splitting. Were the rounds frozen when you split them Ward Hoarder ? Im waiting for a good long freeze to split them. About two cords worth of pignut, bitternut and shagbark!
No they are not frozen. Was about 45-47 deg. Here today. Beautiful sky,no wind, doesn't get much better than that.
I have a hickory that's dying from the top down. 7-8 inch trunk. It sent out a bunch of low branches. It's trying to survive. I'll watch to see what happens at leaf-out in a few months. I suspect it'll be taken down by this time next year. I haven't worked with hickory before. Sounds like hand splitting will be entertaining.
I have lots if hickory on my land and i feel the same way, harder to cut and split and its tough on chains because they carry sand up in the bark (shag trees do) as they grow. Its a love hate relationship. Nice work bud
Stringy pieces are easier to get started on fire. I'm splitting a bunch of white oak now that is the stringiest wood I've ever split.
One that small shouldnt be too bad. It can be real easy or real tough. I have two cord of rounds awaiting the Isocore. All three varieties. Gonna wait for an arctic blast deep freeze to attack them. Frozen is easier.
We had a lot of shag bark die 10-15 yrs ago. It seems that they died the same way. It made good firewood but I remember Sparks flying off the chain and repeated filings.
Hickory bark is some tough stuff. I never really paid much attention to it until Woodwhore brought it to my attention a while back when i scored a few PU fulls and i noticed it when i was cutting the next day. Hickory is actually a scarce score for me, but as a scrounger i never know where, when, and how wood comes my way.
