Those who have heard me lost on tv before know I love my tv shows. Most alaska and canadian shows I watch . Tons of the reality tv stuff although i know not much is real.

In last nights episode of Ice lake rebels Stefan and his wife install a new (used) wood stove in their new houseboat. Its a tube type stove it looks like. They can't get it to draft and it smokes up their house. But the chimney went up and about 5 foot 90ed through the wall and I am sure up again...unless they just poked it out of the wall. They complained about the draft. I wonder how tall it was? It was smoking up the house so he takes a stick and pokes the top fire bricks out of the way. He explain s the problem was there was 6 bricks that blocked the exhaust. He pokes them out of the way and it drafts. So he basically defeated the effenciency of the stove and lost all of his reborn technology? Its amazing how all these people that live with wood heat yet dont even use them the correct way and get all the heat they should get out of them? So instead of the smoke moving forward across the tubes to combust it goes straight up. I wonder if they just didnt think about the chimney height and that it was like -17F as there in yellowknife canada.

I had seen in building alaska in the first season they cut the catalyst and housing out of a cat stove cause "they dont burn right and dont put out enough heat"!!!

I saw that episode of Building Alaska as well... he hacked out the baffle/cat/ and basically made it a pre-EPA stove haha. I suppose if you're burning wet spruce you don't care too much about lighting off a cat or getting secondary combustion.
How about some of those barrel stoves up there? I get a kick out of some of their chimney set ups, too.

As for the other show, I haven't seen it but I'll have to keep an eye on it. It'd be good 2am TV when my little guy decides he wants to sleep on daddy rather than in the crib (ugh).

Oh Yea I just remembered on Yukon river run and on mountain men saw them cut a class A chimney into the roof, and had the wood touching the sides of the class A chimney.

On Mountain Men, Marty cut a new hole in his new Cabin for his Chimney. The Class A barely fit through the hole he cut with the chainsaw? WTH?? No CTC?

And I seen that episode of Ice Lake rebels. It all gives us wood burners a bad name.

None of this is edited for truth. These producers and directors just care about "The Shot".

Thats one episode I am talking about Dex. Marty squeezing the chimney in the hole barely big enough for class A. Also did a similar hole on yukon river run on one of the rafts to get their chimney through the roof .:loco:

Yeah. These shows are far from people living in "reality".

If you install a stove? You better follow both the manufacturer recommendations and the chimney/flue recommendations.

I dont see how they dont catch on fire?

Marty is really a real person who lives that life. I am sure he does use that cabin to trap out of and that stove really burns too?

I have a field and stream from like 6 years ago with an article about marty in it. About him trapping how in shape he was and accustomed to that environment. He is also a smoke jumper to supplement his trapping income for those who didnt know. This article predates the show by years!

And this week on Mountain men Mary sloshes the stove he made full of gas and lights it with a burning price of paper. He even catches his wood floor on fire thats not very far from the stove!!!:loco:
And were not talking talking a few drops to start his wood noodles it looks like a slosh 3-6 ounces maybe more!!! It blows out of the stove pretty good!! I dont think I would do that in any but a situation where is was dangerously cold and or had lost the agility in my fingers to work much fine motor skill.

Wow just saw this thread, neat stuff. As a person that lives in the mountains, much tamer now rich people are building up here,I found out many years ago the only reality show I could watch is deadliest catch. The rest were/are scams, but I did not realise I was missing so much!By the way, there are no old active smoke jumpers(insurance)average is 20-25.Marty owns property and lives in other areas, also. But should be good entertainment, may have to torrent the old episodes!

Yea there is a lot of "scripted reality" as they call it.

I read an article about a new character that they were shopping for ice lake. They called her an A character on every episode I think maybe it was B? They were going to pay $1400 an episode. They decided it wasnt worth it cause they told her she could not drive her car on the ice to her cabin. They want it to appear like there isolated in the middle of nowhere and that everything g was a struggle. The lake is right next to yellowknife. I think last season they didnt even refer to yellow knife bay?

Usually the first year or so of these shows is about all I can handle. After that they really start to seem scripted. "The Last Alaskans" is pretty good and probably mostly unscripted.

I still get a kick out of Hillbilly Blood though. The one guy admits yes the "show" is "fake", but they do live a lot like that. He basically said you have to remember the producers want xyz done in the short filming time they are there.

Yea I caught Last Alaskins like right before the finale. I DVRd all of them and watched. Its the most real I agree.

I love hillbilly blood! I watch mountain monsters too. That is hilarious. Both are on destination america. Discovery B channel. HB came on discovery but only a season or two. It started on destination. So did buying alaska but they moves it to discovery as it was a hit. It too is scripted with people that are buying who are not even buying. They pick the houses to show and tell them what to buy. That is in at least one episode I read a womans account. She is a writer in alaska and was chosen to be on show. They told her the houses and what she was choosing. She still says acquaintances see her and go oh I saw you on buying alaska....how do you like your new cabin!!! She has to explain that she did not move or even buy a cabin.

I know there is fake in most. I do my background on the web about all of them...I still love them.

Bush people is hilarious. When you start digging on them. There is pages of stuff. If they live in the bush all their life without computers and such and dont know about iphones how do like 3 kids and the family maintain a youtube page before the show. They also have or had a house in the lower 48 and posted pics. Oh and then like 5 of the family are wanted on tax fraud mostly PFD fraud to the state of alaska!!!

It was a fireplace that runs on propane.

They hated burning so much propane and so much wood? But yet they opt to burn more propane?

I started watching a little more TV this year and I realized the reason I stopped watching television. This stuff is so fake and filled with scripted drama.. All of it... :(

They traded pellets for a 100 lb cylinder of propane. Because they needed propane

He pulled the fireplace back on the sled that broke down.

    Propane fireplace.
