Is this acceptable use of an axe?

First of all it’s a hatchet.
Second that’s exactly what they’re for. Splitting kindling
Third you have a gas fireplace.

There is no need to get you panties in a bunch! Obviously you hit the concrete with your “hatchet”! Stoveaclaus is not impressed and Maple boy wouldn’t even make that rookie mistake.

Hatchet NEVER touched the concrete. All kindling is split on a splitting stump. Today it’s pouring rain so I improvised. What’s the drama?

Interesting that you would say that it NEVER touches the concreter when you can clearly see it touching the concrete at the :23 and :17 second marks. ASNR! And also, a stovesman respects his tools.

Ketchup will put a nice patina on the metal but it sure as heck won’t help out with the dings in his hatchet. ASNR!

Yellow mustard might fix the dings then. ;)

I agree. I don't like the yellow garbage mustard. Guldens is good, but plochmans is better. ( Just keep all mustard away from my hot dogs)
