Hey guys, I've had the splitter up for sale for 5 days now and barely got any serious offers. I'm asking $1200. but I would take a REASONABLE offer to the right person. I have it listed in 3 places as of right now. I'm really considering just keeping it, I'd let it go at $1200. but anything less I think I would just hang on to it. I could always use it, I still have a dozen or so small downed trees up in my woods that could use a good splitting. Plus, I've got a good buddy of mine that uses it here and there, so it just might justify keeping it. My only issue, not really a big issue but none the less..... Now that I have it out of my small shed I have plenty of room for the rest of my stuff. Lawn mower, snow blower, ATV, power washer, DR Power Wagon, shovels, rakes, etc...... So if I keep it I would like to keep it stored outside under a tarp or maybe I'll build a lean to or something? When you're not using it for the season would it make sense to put it up on Jack Stands to get the tires off the ground? It might be over kill to some of you, but I just like to keep my stuff in good shape for as long as I can. I could always put it back in the shed but that's going to require a lot of moving and arranging and squeezing it all back in there; which I'd rather not do. What are some of your storage ideas?
Ive got a store bought log splitter cover. Somewhat fitted. Mine sits out year around under a cover. Its also used year around. Only time it sits in the garage is for maintenance.
I wouldn't do a tarp. Tarps are hard to keep on stuff. They also catch all of the moisture that comes out of the ground (green house effect) and rust up your splitter. I'd keep it under a lean to. Instead of jack stands, I'd just put it up some blocks of wood or cinder blocks. My other storage ideas are a car port. They are pretty cheap per sqft. Another idea is an enclosed trailer. You could use the trailer to haul your ATV or anything else you may not be able to haul in a truck. How have you been?
Yeah ive got a specific cover for log splitters. Universal. Has an elastic band around it but its worn out now. I lay a 2x12 from the base of the splitter to the splitting wedge to keep the cover its self from collapsing and collecting rain water and snow on the splitters beam. Cover has a front and a rear. Front is pointed to fit around the point of the beam. Goes down and covers the engine also. Gotta have a hefty wind for it to blow off, bungee here and there never hurts. I'll grab a picture tomorrow
Two splitters in the family have sat out with a square metal feed tub over the engine and a coffee can over the valve for as long as I can remember.
Mine is kept in the attached garage during the winter when the lawn tractor is not needed. Then in the spring it will be switched with the tractor to the shed out back. I have the Ariens 27 ton I bought this year and it's easy to move around and doesn't take up much room compared to some others within the same class.
I stored mine under an East facing lean-to with a tarp several years ago, for the summer, and every nick/chip in the paint was rusted with the paint blistering around those areas. It hasn't been stored out of doors since that summer. I'd bungee cord a trash bag over the engine and valve, or as mentioned, a feed bucket or something. Getting the weight off the tires,,I dunno. Maybe a couple cheap scissor jacks from the salvage yard ?
I have stored mine outside under a tarp for the last 25 years, the only problem I had was a rusty fuel tank but it rusted from the inside out now I run ethanol free fuel
A bucket over the valves, an old wheelbarrow upside down over the engine. Mine is kind of unique, will try to get pictures of it later. Speaking of the DR Powerwagon, how do you like it??
It's a splitter, mine has a big old plastic tub sitting over the engine and a smaller one for the valve. Starts up every year. No tarps = no home for mice. I'd suggest you call it a "log splitter" in your ad or add the tag, took me a while to find it. You are competing against $700-900 splitters, and aside from tonnage not much separates them. At $1200 it might take a while, but if I found the right ad it does look nice and shiny.
This is the first year I have had my tow behind, If I'm not using it for a few weeks I shove it in the garage in front of my trailer. Now it sits on my front/side yard behind my pickup and if it rains I have a painted piece of wood that goes over it, also a tarp if I think about it. It rarely sees more than a week not being used.
I keep a canvas tarp over mine outside. Canvas breathes and it’s heavier than a PVC tarp so it stays on better. In my area we have Menards stores and they have nice canvas tarps that go on sale often for a reasonable price. They last a long time too, not getting ripped up and what not. I sold my 3 yo 22 ton splitter in 2 hours on CL for $500... I only paid $600 for it on a Black Friday sale... at Menards.... I then went a bought the 37 ton splitter they had on sale for $900 at Menards during their Black Friday sale this year. You must have a real nice splitter to ask $1200 for it used...?
Great advice. Mine is stored in a a shelterhouse (roof, no walls) year round. Might be prudent to get some steel wool and shove it in the usual cavity openings where mice might nest if storing for extended period. Kind of bad time of the year to sell a splitter. The stores have all had their big sales for the year already. Perhaps next year start advertising in August?
That's a good idea, I have many options now and I think I'm leaning towards the lean to. I could build one off the back of my shed when I get some pallets of wood unloaded from that side to give me some room. I have been hanging in there the best I can, kinda been going down hill since my last surgery in August, but starting to feel a little better now. I have another battle coming in the next few months with treatments and possibly more surgery so just trying to get into decent shape. Thank you very much, I will keep you all informed.
