At Stihls large American Chain Saw and other products site in Virgina, they without any notice sent a third of their employees home, and with out any type of economic help.
This was a decision from Germany i am betting and i also am betting, they would not have done the same thing to their German employees.
Mass furlough at Virginia Beach-based chainsaw manufacturer Stihl

In Germany, they would have more options than a total furlough. There are options for companies to reduce worker hours with the employee getting (govt) compensated for the wages lost.

During covid, I worked for a German company here in the US and I got partial furlough to 2 days a week, then was able to claim for the 3.

Although the article linked was written with an extremely thinly-veiled agenda (as if the name of the publication itself wasn't enough, nor the Marxist library tab), it does make some valid points. The source aside, that's terrible for the people who are now scrambling for employment. As if they (and a lot of us) weren't struggling enough already. Sane people will always choose to buy groceries over a shiny new chainsaw when times get tough. That time is right here, right now. Crummy situation which will play out in many sectors of the labor market as time goes on.

They do whatever is convenient for the bottom line. This is the travesty of conglomerated multinational corporations. The people don't really matter, just the numbers.

I work in HR and that’s always tough to hear. Yes, it’s a “business” decision and those are people with families to support and bills to pay. It’s easy for me to get on a soapbox; people should get advance notice, some type of severance pay to help them get back on their feet and the local DOL should be notified as well. It’s really tough to see something like that take place so suddenly and without notice to those impacted.

But workers should see and take some personal responsibility too. Pretty soon mortgage personnel will be laid off because no body refi ing houses at higher rates

They were told to take a week off. Big deal.

“Honey, get your stuff in the camper, we got a week’s vacation….”

The short notice is callous. But it looks like it was only 2.5 days off. That’s meaningful for some people, but it could be so much worse.

If I worked there I’d be looking for another job right away.

Gee in Local 1 we used to get pink slips the day before Christmas. Never a notice of who’s going and who’s staying. It is what it is. Employment is not a social welfare construct.

I just read the second article; I was under the impression that they let people go, not shut down for a period of time. Still, advance notice would have been helpful for those impacted.

I worked plant work till 09. When they decided to lay folks off it was by seniority. Worked all day on a Tuesday (7 to 3 hours) at 2:55 was told I was laid off. They got 65 of us that day. Wasn't slow or low sales, just management looking for a way to make money. I never went back.

The way I read most of the available (and credible) articles is that they shut down operations for 2.5 days, and resumed the following week, 30% lighter in man-power, with those furloughs intended to last anywhere from 4-16 weeks.

From a management perspective, a single 2.5 day furlough makes no sense, as the negative PR, risk to local tax benefits, interruption to regular ops, etc. just wouldn't be worth the savings from 2.5 days of payroll.

    Oh yeah you’re right—thank you.

It drives me a little crazy when people chime in without so much as a couple minutes of reading/thinking, and here I am doing that very thing. :picard:
