Factory RSL is not worth the extra $

I convert RS with a beveled edge file, cuts a lot faster

I have both RM and RS for both my saws. Seems to make a bigger difference on the MS250, but I don't like using it in harder woods because the chain speed really seems to suffer. On the 034 I love the RS chains and only use the RM chains in dirty or sappy wood.

I use Stihl RSLF .404 with 17" & 25" bars on my Stihl 08s & S10 (56cc). I really like it! I don't have to work with real dirty wood. For stumps / dirty I do have some loops of RM & a hard nosed bar.

For 3/8 low profile/picco, I love the Stihl PS chain. (Not the PS3) It can be converted to square filed if you are so inclined.

SplitOak, try to make it to a GTG or charity cut & you will most likely find someone who can help you get started square filing. In anticipation, you might consider ordering a 6 sided file which is used for square filing. I doubt you will find one locally.

Go to the 026 project thread and see my 362c videos of 87 octane vs 94. That chain is Oregon half skip square chisel

I have used a bunch of it. I buy it from out west and it's cheaper than Oregon LGX by the roll.

The oregon square half skip will smoke full comp imo on a 20" bar.

Factory grind on RSL is no faster than regular RS. Not in hardwoods anyways. I like square once it's been tweaked a bit but stock for stock I'll keep running round, cause RSL just ain't worth the sharpening time for firewood duty.

I did videos comparing Stihl RS to RSLK Stihl RS to Oregon CL and RS to RSF. In red oak, 20" log, a healthy 460 providing the power. Wanna guess which chain won?

If half-skip or full-skip is out cutting full comp in logs that are under 36", it's because the power head needs more poop!

I have only ran a few loops of it, but the length of the chips seems longer? Maybe it's the shape of the cutter? But speed? I don't know..

I ran off the loop RSL on my 460 at our GTG. It ran pretty good, but the 441's (Mine and MasterMech) were only about 2 seconds behind the 460. I ran off the loop RS on the 441. So whether it was the power difference or chain? Stock for stock? It's probably about the same.

But if touched up by the hand of someone who knows what they are doing? Probably a huge difference. Lots of Sawyers running square now.

Randy and Jon will convert any round into Square. They dona good job too. :dex:

Wish Randy Evans was here to vouch for square. He has a video of a 261 he ported with 18" square chisel that Jon sharpened that was 38% faster than full comp on the same saw

If you wanna call someone here? Just put an @ and start typing their name. Soon, options will come up for who you are looking for..

@Mastermind :) He may not see it because he likes email (like myself). But because of this feature? I try and check once a day.

I had 5 chains sharpened by Jon.. I didn't run any at the GTG. Even though I had them done for the GTG.. I wanted my saw to win. Not the chain. Off the loop was all I ran.

With that said? His square chains I got, are phenomenal!! Used the 20" and a 28". I have yet to time them against anything. But they cut great.

I have a MM MS261C-M and a loop of the very same .325 RS he used in the vid. It's fast chain for sure. Really want to do a re-run of my chain test video now that the 261 is ported and see what I get for results with extra bananas installed.
