Has anyone ever had one of these shear off in the cylinder? I was cutting an ash log this afternoon and the muffler fell off the saw. One bolt backed out of the cylinder entirely and the other sheared off flush. I returned it to the selling dealer and they were able to remove the remnants and reassembled the saw. Is this a common occurrence? Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be? Thanks in advance
It can happen. It’s good preventative maintenance to occasionally check for loose fasteners. I have lost a dog nut and bolt and had nuts and bolts loosen up on dogs. I’m sure I’ve lost muffler bolts before too, so at a minimum I’ll try to wiggle the muffler.
The second one broke off because of the vibration and stress that it seen after the 1st one backed out...something like a muffler being held by one side only will always be a recipe for broken parts.
I added a new felling dawg to my XS362 and used loctite, I’m never going to remove it anyway. Not sure if you would want to do this on muffler bolts with the added heat it might not work that well anyway.
That was my thought regarding LocTite. That's probably the hottest part of the saw, and what loosens LocTite? But having thought about it a couple minutes, maybe a couple external shakeproof washers, and the suggestion of checking them before every use. Not like it's hard...
