I need space for some incoming saws and with five 029/029 Super/290 variants at least one of these is expendable. Saw is in nice cosmetic shape and is registering 150 pounds of compression. I had stored it dry for 3 years and though it fires right up it will bog down and die out if you keep in the throttle so it will need some fuel system work. It sports a good 18" Stihl bar and has a brand new Stihl chain that has never seen wood. Knowing it will need fuel line/carb kit I am asking $190 plus shipping from 40509.
I watched some YouTube vids of the 290 last night.....seem like really good runners !! I currently do not have a Stihl on my shelf . Hmmmmm
The 290 Farm Boss (or 455 Rancher) is an awesome general Firewood duty saw!! For the price, that's a good deal! They all sell for $300 around here. Anyone looking for a good upgrade from a 021/210 or the likes of a 235, 440, etc? These are pretty good runners with just a Muff mod. A carb cleaning or a carb kit and/or fuel line? Good to go. If I didn't just buy a 55 Rancher I would be on to this. I paid the same money for the 55 Rancher and it needed a new intake partition (stripped holes) and I replaced the impulse gasket, intake boot, fuel line, and put a Caber ring in it Didnt need all of those items. But it will last a long time and be an Awesome firewood saw.
Hmmmm been wanting to try one of these out and sounds like some easy wrenching for newb like me..... Need to think on this a bit only have so much cash and have been eyeballing the 550XP.
Fuel line replacement on this series saw is as easy as it gets. Also, carb kits are very straightforward.
A carb kit will cost $6 and take you 10 mins if its clean inside and not gunked up. Gettingthe carb out may take a newbie 30 mins but would take me 5 mins ? The fuel line as Dex said is easy as well. I dont have a 290 but I do have the big brother in the 1127 series, the 390. It is 64cc and the 290 is 56.5cc. Everything is the same on the. But the P/C.
Just went back and looked at my notes on this saw, I replaced the clutch cover (used), the 2 bar nuts (new) and the chain (new) for a total of $45.62. Not making any money on this one...
