I was in the JD dealer picking up some new blades for the tractor and......... in comes a guy with a brand new saw, Stihl 291??, his WIFE bought it for him yesterday and it would not start today....... then the dealer charged him 49.95 for the case he wanted........ My Richmond knock off always starts IP runs and hides
Most likely flooded. Did they charge extra for the owners manual? We received many, many, same day or next day "come-backs" following a new sale. Nearly every single time it was just operator error and a flooded engine. We would clear it out and start it right there in front of them, go through the starting procedure again, and send them on their way.
I would agree with operator error, listening to the conversation, he was inexperienced. they took him in the back to show him how to work it, did not see the results.
I always loved showing the guys how to start the various equipment when I worked at a golf course. This year my Lawnboy mower showed me up. I got it used so I never had the manual. It was running perfect last October, I had been using it to shred leaves. Then it just would not start! I did everything I knew to try to start it but nothing. Since I did not really need it late in Fall except to play with leaves I put it away. This Spring, still would not start. Again, I did all the tricks I could think of and checked all the basics. Kept scratching my head. Well, after dicking around with it for months and getting nowhere I decided it was time to consult the internet. I went outside to jot down the model number, and when I crouched down I saw a little sticker peeling off. I flipped it up and it read: Bag must be installed for mower to run. I had been trying to start it bagless. Threw the bag on, and it roared to life before I even had the cord completely pulled. Major facepalm moment.
I was in the market for a leaf blower a few weeks back so I stopped by a local stihl dealer to pick one up They had a used blower but still new and a brand new echo blower but marked as used on the bottom shelf both marked $75 I asked what was the story They said same guy owned both had the still said it worked fine last fall when he put it away. But he never treated or emptied the fuel out before storing and of course it wouldn't start this spring So he went and bought a echo instead at some point come in mad with the echo and stihl in hand and asked for a trade in toward a new blower. Long story short he wasn't having any of the let us look at them and see if we can get them running first before you spend more money on a new one. He left with a new blower they replaced the carb on the stihl and the echo was just flooded I bought the stihl for $75 and it runs great But I too on very rare occasion still can flood a saw or trimmer it happens to us all
When I bought my 550xp (purchased online) I couldn't get it started for the life of me. I was using the same procedure I had used for my dad's Stihl 310 and neighbors 290, and just about every leaf blower and weed trimmer I'd ever used, but I kept flooding it. I took it to the local Husqvarna dealer, and their mechanic couldn't get it to start either, it just kept flooding. He told me it was the first 550xp he'd seen, and I'd have to call the place I bought it from to return it. I was sure I had gotten a lemon. Well, the online dealer walked me through the procedure over the phone, and low and behold, it fired right up! I was so used to firing small 2 strokes up on "choke" that it never occurred to me to turn it to "run" after that pop.
A couple of days ago I couldn't get my "farm truck" (72 Dodge) to continue running. It sort-of started, then would quit. I tried everything I could think of, then finally decided to see if putting some gas in it would make a difference. Of course it started right up and ran fine. My defense is that the gas gauge doesn't work. Greg
A common "day after" problem I get is "the chain is locked up!". Even the manliest man is embarrassed when I pop the brake back into place in front of him.
Can't tell you how many times I've heard this one.... "That side cover on my new husqvarna was a real SOB to get off and now no matter what I do, it won't go back on!"
I did that with my Husky. WTH is with this thing! In my defense it was a new to me reconditioned saw with no manual. After looking at at for a bit I did manage to figure it out and get it back together .
On my husky I had and read the manual and still had trouble with the brake. I made sure the handle was pulled in but did not go first to the "brake on" position to reset the auto brake. It had been tripped by bumping the bar on something. It took me a while to figure out how to release the brake with the cover off and laying on the bench. The manual said if it happened I needed to go to the shop with the saw.
I had the same thing happen, as mine had tripped and I needed someway to reset it so I could get the cover back on. I did it, but now have a used handle from fleabay that can reset the Husqvarna brake. B-I-L was going to take his near new MS-193 back to the dealer until I noticed his brake band looked a little small to fit around the clutch drum. He was tripping the brake as he took the clutch cover off!
Watched "2" millrights last year trying to start a Honda generator at the plant for what seemed like forever! They did add gas but still couldn't get it to fire. Went in the garage grabbed a jug of oil and handed it to one of them.Seems they didn't know about the low oil shut-off?
