There's a really nice example for sale near me, but being two generations old, I wouldn't want to pay top dollar for a pristine saw to find that the only parts are from parts saws and aftermarket. What's the deal on parts with these, and how much is a really nice runner worth?
066 was prolly one of Stihls most popular big boys of all time. I'd bet it will be some time before they stop making parts for it. I've got one that's 91ish vintage, Stihl running like the day I bought it. Must have 67 quadtrillionity bd ft of sawtimber on it. Id guess a minty fresh 066 will fetch 5-6 bills.
The 066 flat-top plastics are NLA from the dealer, but the round top are. I just checked recently for a friend here, who wanted some to purty up a saw he sent to Cuddle Ln. Other than the plastics, I think many of the other parts are interchangeable between 066 and 660, so they should be available for a long time.
It comes with a 36" bar. Asking $750 which seems a bit high although if the bar is in really good shape may be reasonable. Looks to be a "flat top" but the plastics look really good.
That's a nice looking saw. I got my 660 with a new big bore top end a couple years ago for $600 with a 25" bar. I think I got a pretty good deal on it. Wood fairy gave me a 32" bar but I don't have any chains for it yet.
That's another matter - there is a local seller selling 660's "brand new" with oversize pistons for $600. That doesn't add up to me. I don't have much money in my chainsaw acquisition fund right now so I'm debating.
Ok, I found that one. I looked at the pics. I noticed some things about this saw, Rear handle has been replaced, You should ask if it is OEM, clutch cover has been replaced and it is aftermarket because it doesn't say Stihl on it. Recoil cover is not original to the saw but it looks OEM and is in better shape than the old one probably was. How? Look at the wear patterns on the pic of the bottom of the saw and they don't match up. Muffler has been dual ported with what looks to be a 288 deflector on the right side of the muffler. I might be wrong about this... I don't think the plastics are original, I think it might have originally been a flat top 066. I would not call this saw pristine. Likely a solid runner put together by someone who knows what they are doing.
Thanks for the feedback. I have not handled 660s or 066s much and didn't spend a lot of time looking over the pics in great detail.
The flat top w/o the decomp is a desirable saw. Run one and you'll see why. Bring yer big boy pants if you struggle with big saw drop starts. Listen real close for bearing noise on some older saws. Some 066 get run hard. Real hard by loggers. Pistons and bearing OEM prices have fallen sharply making full rebuilds almost affordable with OEM replacement parts. If your replacing seals buy the seal kit instead. It's cheaper then the two seals alon.
The saw may be 2 "saw generations old" but not two human generations? Maybe thats what you meant? I think thats high for that saw unless its really pristine original condition.
