Looking to get a little bigger saw and a 25 inch 041 Super came available. It looks clean. I see they are heavy and this one doesn’t have a chain brake. $300. Worth it for an occasional need or should I pony up a few hundred more for a more modern saw?

Friend of mine has owned one for over 40 years and its all he has run. With lower hours it can be a reliable saw but i personally would want a chain brake on a newer saw. Splurge for the newer saw.

I'm in agreement with Brad here. I went to check out an old 041 super 3 years ago and they are heavy to lug around. Worse yet is the power to weight ratio. To be fair they are a capable saw, but you could get something quite a bit snottier, newer and lighter for a little more, if not the same price.

I'd go for a much lower price. Could take some fiddling to get dependable, anything rubber would be questionable. A saw that pizzes you off is not worth the savings.
I could care less about the lack of a chain brake, but not a saw to let others use that could sue you.

Yeah, I kind of knew the answer even before I posted. Nice to know what you all think about older equipment though. Thank you all for the opinions.

It can be fun to run and tinker with older saws, (im not a tinkerer) but as Screwloose stated no bargain if it fails when you need it. I learned that with a Husky top handle i own. I was on a paying job and it gave me problems even after i adjusted the carb to mfrs. specs.

Are you still looking for another saw?

Personally I would look for a newer saw.

To me in todays world a saw without a brake is just plain old unsafe . Yeah I get it that years ago they had none but have become standard for a reason.
Kind of like PPE. Why not cut in shorts and sandals? Because it just isn't safe.

Yes, a friend of mine and I are looking for a larger saw for the odd time we need it. 90% of the time we get by just fine with what we have but he lives on the Mississippi River and we have access to some big wood in the river bottoms. He's cheaper than I am so I can't get him to split a new saw. I told him I didn't like the fact of no chain brake. The hunt continues I guess.

For that money, I'd be looking for something around 70cc, but maybe not wearing the Stihl name and price premium. You'd be well served with a Husqvarna 268XP, or 365, as they are not as recognized outside of the saw community. Same goes for some of the old Makita / Dolmar units. Look for a PS6400/7300/7900 or the slightly newer PS7310/7910. Parts will be easiest to find for Husqvarna, Stihl, and Echo saws. I'm sure the rest of the group here will have other suggestions on hidden gems in the 65-80cc range.

Stihl 038 either the super at 67cc's or magnum at 72cc's. Never have run one but hear good things about them.

I have a few nice 041's. They are nice to look at and talk to your buddies about. Unless you're collecting.

Any opinions on a Husqvarna 460 Rancher with a 24 inch bar? Looks like I could get one for a special $499 new.

Dumb question. Have you compared an 024 with a 241? Ive owned a couple 024's briefly. If a decent 024s came up for sale id consider it.
