    Bit of Advice please:

I have the opportunity to purchase a stihl 036pro for $400. Currently I have as my larger saws a Stihl 390 and Echo CS590. Both around the same CC's as the 036. The largest wood I cut is generally 24-28 inch red oak.

    Few questions:

    1. Will the bar i have for my 390 fit the 036
    2. Is there a huge difference? Or should i wait for a larger saw like a 372 husq or Stihl 440?

    thanks!

I'd personally wait for a larger cc. Then when you get into the big stuff, the bigger saw makes much quicker bucking cuts.

I’d also recommend a bigger saw for the 24-28” wood.
I have an 034 Super with a 20” bar, but imo it’s better suited for an 18” bar. 24” is as big a bar as I’ll use on a 70cc saw.

All 3 of those saws will cut similarly, maybe a slight edge to the echo or 039 for having enough torque to run a 24” bar occasionally. I’d hold out for 70cc to regularly cut 24” + stuff

How often do you cut wood that large? It will handle it on occasion. Ive run a 28" bar on my MS361 (the 036 evolved into this saw) into 24" sugar maple and it cut it. Not as fast as a higher CC saw, but it did.

If you cut a lot of bigger wood then yes a larger saw is the way to go. Stihl 044/440/441.
