I came across an older Stihl 034av for sale just 10 min away from me. The saw has good compression and the piston and cyl look good but it has no spark. The guy wants 100.00 for it with a 16 in. bar and chain. It is not pretty but is complete. My question is would this saw be worth the money he is asking not running with hopes that it is just a coil that needs replacing ?
I am supposed to go get it tonight if interested. Thanks
    Jim.

Some of those older coils are hard to find and cost big money. 034 might not be one

Go for it , theese older models are strong 10 -15 for a ebay coil and you have a real machine

Thanks for the reply . I grabbed it last night and ordered a coil for it. I will start there and see how it goes from there.

That's in terrific shape cosmetically! I have seen them much worse! Now what does the piston and cylinder look like? That's the question. Nice score!

I've seen saws a decade newer way more blown out than that

Piston and cylinder look great from what I can see through the exhaust. I will try to post a pic tomorrow.

Check that the kill switch wiring hasn't shorted out somewhere along the line.

Will do. I did notice one of the wires has a good nick in it. The new coil and wires should be here tomorrow. I will throw it in and see what happens. Thanks

The PO does that all the time with me. I think they do it so that They don't get in trouble with taking too long with priority packages. It always shows the next day.

Yes that is a nice slug and jug! Once you get it started you will have a good runner for a great price!

It's not just the post office. FedEx failed to deliver a sump pump yesterday because there was like 2" of snow in my driveway(it's going to melt tomorrow so I didn't bother clearing it). Pleanty of room for him to turn his van around too. I repeat fulsize van not box truck.

So today he parks at the end of the driveway. I start walking because I need the pump. He says he didn't want to get stuck. I get where he's comming from, but he looked a little embarrassed :emb:when I told him, with a smile, my wife left this morning for work in a ford focus and the ups guy backed his box van down it an hour ago. :ups:Sorry for the :Yar:

Well the coil arrived today and I got it installed. Threw in a new plug, cleaned out the fuel tank and air filter, added fresh fuel and 4 pulls later she was running. It was a bit on the rich side so a bit of adjustment was needed. My buddy is going to bring a tach over next week so I can check the h as I know it's still a little rich. Anyway pretty happy with the way it runs but did find other issues. In the first 2 mins of running my boot was covered with bar oil as well as a puddle was on the driveway. Not on chain just on ground. Also no chain brake. I will be taking the clutch off tomorrow to get a look at what's going on there. The last thing I noticed when putting in the coil is that 1 fin on the flywheel is broke off . Does anyone know if I can get away with 1 broke or do I need to replace that too . Thanks

If it doesn't feel out of balance and the magnet is still intact I probably would run it. While looking for a deal on one on ebay. May or may not ever replace it if it were mine?
