I have one that I think has a dead coil. I believe it's the one that the guy on ebay says he can rebuild if you send it to him. It has a metal toggle on off switch. When I first got it , the saw would run real erratic like a coil or carb problem. I thought it might be carb as it sat up. So I pulled carb and replaced it all after cleaning ..no kit as I didn't have one. But the plug is wet and it won't start anymore with fuel in the carb..which it did when I got it. With plug out and grounded it won't spark do I have to pull it super fast to make it spark? I have never tested on like this before...I guess I could look at my other saws to see what they do? Any advice on how to trouble shoot this Thing. Anyone sitting on a pile of 32av parts?
A coil should make spar with the average pull.... a spark tester might be easier to get results with since it is snapped in, not piecemealed together. Are you sure the switch is good and the wire to and from isn't grounding anything out?
Not sure on any of that...but it did work when I got it and now it doesnt. But when I got it it was acting all wanky like te coil was bad. I got it to where it was fueling on own but would idle wanky and was all over the place running it. Then I couldn't get it restarted period. I have a cheap spark tester but unless it's dark you can't see the lightbulb. It's one of those from HF I think.
The way it sounds like it's running sounds like a coil to me, but the cheaper route would be to bypass kill wire to eliminate that before you start throwing parts at it. I have some 032 parts saws, but I would have to do some checking to see if the coils are any good. The biggest problem is they can have cranking spark but when the coil warms up it can start breaking down and run as you described. You can go through a lot of money and coils before you find a good one. I went down that road on my 041 Super, it wasn't a pleasant one.
You could test it the way my grandad tested them when I was a kid. He'd say, "stick your finger right there for a second" then he'd pull recoil. I was a slow learner cause he did it more than once. For some reason I loved and trusted that old timer. I sure do miss him now...
I did that with the plug out and wore exposed. I wanted to know that bad. Yes I have been zapped by several mowers saws weed WackerS and cars
It's rare that I run across something that I want to know badly enough to go to that expense, but I could see it happening I suppose.
You never know when you might have a wire grounded somewhere. These older saws sometimes have the insulation wear off a wire. Usually in a spot you can't see. I'd check that before I put a new coil in it. If its not that it sounds like the coil. Your on the right track. Be one with the spark.
Along these lines check out the plug wire and cap idk if you could replace it but i have had intermittent issues with these going bad on bikes...
Yea this weekend I will open it up and look at the ignition system and disconnect the switch to make sure it's not faulty.
I've checked a few fences that way. My cousins were too much of a sissy to touch it. So I would. It must not bother me the same. I don't enjoy it but will do it.
