What chip guard fits into this cover? I don't think this cover was meant for the 029 but it's what's on the saw.

The cover part number is 1125 648 0460 and I'm having a hard time figuring out what chip guard fits into there. I think that cover is mean for an 044 or 440 or maybe an 066 or ms660......But I looked up the chipguards and I don't think they will fit.

This eBay auction below says "Will fit on a 1125-648-0460, and others." but it doesn't look right at all.

    029's are 1127 series saws. That's from an 1125 which are 034/ 036 saws.

But there's plenty of parts from other series that fit just fine. And there are plenty of parts listed from different series used on a particular saw. I.e. this cover as you say is for the 034/036 fits the 029 perfectly. I'm trying to figure out the chip guard for the cover.

In the 90s and 2000s saws, that clutch cover fits 026-660. Usually the 1127 clutch covers are plastic. Yours is probably from an 034 and possibly they didn’t utilize the chip deflector. The rubber piece you have shown is the chip deflector for the common covers that have two pegs sticking up to hold it on

Yeah it looks really weird. Super thin at the top and I didn't see any holes for screws or pegs.

So now I guess the question is whether to use a magnesium cover without a chipguard or to buy a replacement cover that is plastic with a chipguard.

Nothing wrong with it running like it is. If throwing a chain ruins it, can always replace it then

I feel like when I first got my Makita chainsaw I threw the chain a few times because I was filing a bit aggressively and hit the file would hit the links. Now I haven't thrown a chain in a long, long time.

Do you keep all the chains on your saws loose until you use the saw? I started doing that.

I have a Makita 3601 with 3/8lp that likes to throw the chain. I only keep bars and chains on the oddball smaller saws (like that one) that use their own setup and I leave them tight. On the bigger stuff I remove them so I can use them on customer saws when needed

The little alpha/brail matrix is way different in the two pics. Prob need to decode that to figure it out.
