Hey guys, Found a deal on an old 028 and picked it up last Friday. She's in pretty good shape - top end is spotless and pulling 160psi. Dumped some old gas from the tank and added fresh mix - started up right away and was running strong for a minute or two, then as it idled down, it stopped abruptly then would not fire again. Checked spark and the saw has lost spark completely. Removed the recoil and the saw has been updated with the ignition module from the old points/condenser. Trying to troubleshoot the coil and ignition module, but I'm an idiot with electronics. My 12 year old boy is 100x better than me with electronics, so I had him start to troubleshoot the system with his multimeter. I've attached some photos, but not sure what values I'm shooting for to see if the coil or module (or both!) are bad. Anyone good with electronics and can offer some suggestions on how/what to test and what value to look for, I'd appreciate any help, and feel free to explain it to me like I'm a child! I've attached a photo of testing the module with the resistance value, and testing the plug boot to the coil. Thanks in advance! Cheers!
No answers needed now - decided to break down and part out, rather than fix - wife keeps reminding me I'm not supposed to keep all the saws I buy........ Cheers!
Thats not what I was hoping for. I have heard that those electronic modules dont work in a Stihl and was looking forward to seeing the outcome of this. Hope you recoup your cabbage on parting her out !
I'd like to still know how to diagnose, so answers would still be welcome - just don't want to waste anyone's time. I'd still walk through the troubleshooting if others are interested in figuring this out with me - I'm always looking to learn the stuff I don't know well! Cheers!
I think Kevin in Ohio did the electronic conversion on his? Your numbers sound right, what does the coil alone measure? Are all the contact points clean and free from shorting somewhere (rubbing somewhere on the case?)
I'll check coil alone and let you know. I removed all leads and cleaned them and the contact points. There was a small area of exposed wire on the kill switch wire, just up from the control lever. Wire still showed continuity and I covered with electrical tape and still no spark. That was the only noticeable problem. Thanks! Cheers!
If you've got good compression, get the coil and you'll have a good saw. Off ebay they are less than $30.00. I've done several now and they are dead simple to do and have had no issues. They all have worked. Here is a link to the conversion. http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/for...r-work-on-a-028-stihl.7308/page-2#post-185950
