It's had a leak for a while, but it's gotten considerably worse. I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for a most common fix...
Well for starters you should take the cover off, the bar off, and remove the clutch so we can see what's going on with the oil pump. Most of the time it's the pickup line that loses its "tightness" and given that you said it's old I'd be willing to guess that's the culprit. It could be an issue with the oil pump itself, or, it could be an issue with the ferrule that's at the end of the oil line from the pump. That's what happened on my 034 Super - all I had to do was give it a tappy-tap with the right punch and that created a nice tight seal resulting in properly oiling of the bar (instead of leaking everywhere). Or it could be an issue with the line itself from the oil pump having a crack. You have to take it apart first and examine the situation. Can't tell much from that pic and not sure if the 025 has that ferrule I mentioned like my 034.
Appreciate it! I will start tearing into it, to see what's going on, take a couple pics. I need to find a good video first on taking it apart.
LordOfTheFlies, I got the clutch off. Can you tell if my 025 has the ferrule like yours? Unless these pics show something I'm not seeing, I'm thinking of putting some oil in the tank, let it sit for a bit, and see if I can see where it's leaking from? The bearings, and everything else seem to be in good shape, but that's not to say I wouldn't replace anything while it's apart.
I found a good video on replacing the oil components. I got it down to where I could see the oil pump and line connector, which honestly didn't show any problems, I poked and prodded a little and put it back together. Filled up the oil, ran it a few times, let it sit, and so far its not leaking anywhere near what it was... I'll put it to use, and if it starts leaking like it was, I now know how to replace parts, if need be.
Sorry for not responding sooner. The ferrule would come out of the oiling hole on the body of the saw if there is one. While you had the saw apart I hope you cleaned it up a little. It's important that it's clean in there - you don't want the clutch to engage when idling because that will make your oil pump work when it's not supposed to. That hook you see in your first picture catches onto a notch on the clutch drum. You want to make sure it's in that notch when you put it together. If your bar is getting oil then it's working but sometimes it's easy to misalign it.
No problems on not responding sooner, we get busy. I did clean it up, and added a little white grease to the shaft and bearing. The clutch was dirty, I had to pull on it with pliers and tap the shaft to get it removed. It went back together smooth, hopefully it just needed a little attention.
