I welcome any alternative, ideas or suggestions:) I have expert advice from my favorite member here, but the quote out here in Wyoming is over this poor community (our) budget. 8 x 12 or 6 x 10 ?

Are you looking for a DIY solution? How about painting with stencils? You can find them online, like this one:

What is your budget to revamp the face? Is the sign structure itself still in good enough shape to handle the howling winds out there?

You could make your sign with any application (PowerPoint, Word, Etc) then take it into a place with a wide format printer (most printing places, even Staples, Office Max, whatever) and have it printed. Trim out the inside of the letters - now you have a custom sized stencil.

Send www down there with a folding chair and his .50bmg!

Or just paint this on the sign
"Private road. Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again!"

I suspect the traffic would stop quickly ;)

White background black block letters. Several options on wording.

    TOLL AHEAD. $50.00

    Or

    BRIDGE OUT AHEAD

    Or

Contamination suits required beyond this point.

    And lastly...

    POLITICIAN ROADSIDE FUNDRAISER AHEAD

I was thinking about a flyer on the mailboxes for a "neighborhood BBQ, sign rehab" weekend. Hibachi, burgers and dogs, drinks and chips. We can meet more of the neighbors and hopefully some join in on the sign work.

There are maybe 50 homes here, 1/3 abandoned, 1/3 summer getaways only, and 1/3 full time residents. I would guess turnout will be small, just some of the latter 1/3, it could turn out bigger though.

I could use your input on this part too:
    scrap/sand the old peeled paint?
    base coat, white?
Big black stenciled letters (thanks for all the ideas!!)
what tools to make it faster?
    what type of paint?

The phrasing will have to be clever, enough to deter, but still legal for the few BLM lots tucked between some of the houses, we will figure out with the few full time neighbors out here. I am thinking "NOW LEAVING PUBLIC LAND" or similar and maybe in small letters "LAKE ***** ESTATES, PRIVATE ROAD".

No doubt WWW is more diligent than many hunters/fisherman etc, but I remember him pouring over topo maps wanting to hunt on BLM land that was locked on all sides by private property. That kind of diligence doesn't happen out here...... The sign should atleast deter the campers with ATV's from speeding up and down the road, there are a zillion miles of trails before the sign. One neighbor has terrible deep ruts in the road infront of his house, we don't mind, they kinda serve as speedbumps:rofl:

Sorry for the novel and thanks again:)

Some thoughts WW. A good quality high gloss oil base paint is the norm for sign backgrounds. Prep is the same for any job like this, clean dry surface including a good primer. BTW... you don't have to have dark lettering on a white background... you could go with white lettering on a dark background (sometimes, easier to see/read at night).

You may have better luck than we've had in the past trying to get neighbors to help with road/sign maintenance. If it were me, I might just slip flyers into the year round mailboxes saying that you guys were going to re-do the sign, and any help with $$ and/or time would be very much appreciated. See what happens.

For copy, how about... "Private Road" (in large 12"-16" lettering) and under it, "Dead End" in 8" lettering.

Or for a few bucks you can dig 2 2'x8' shallow holes vehicle tire width apart. Rip a sheet of plywood and randomly run screws through. Set points up in trench and scatter gravel over to blend it in. They won't get too far up your road, you just better remember to scoot over when going through. Might even get the local tire shop to pay for the supplies! :p

I believe so, its been there several decades and still standing straight:) The paint however will likely get sandblasted off after a few winters, but we will redo it again then.

I am no expert so this is probably a dumb question but would it be possible to put a clear plastic or urethane coat over the paint that would help it last a little longer?
