Well this will be my first year burning and I posted a few months ago that through a combination of scrounging and buying, I was close to three years ahead. With the recent news that My wife is 11 weeks pregnant , I have just shifted in high scrounging gear. I am hoping to be able to lay low on scrounging during our baby's first year.

I have been hitting the local dumps and loading what I can. Tonight I worked on bucking up a few loads.

First kid? I assume so since you think you won't want to be scrounging! You won't want to have to scrounge, but you are probably going to want a reason to run away now and then!

First off, congratulations on your incredible news! Good wishes for you and your wife on a safe pregnancy and a newborn son? (I'm just thinking he could help stack someday)

On the wood, nice to see you are 3 years ahead already. Do you have enough dry wood to get through this year?

First kid. We are very excited. And you might be right about sneaking away to scrounge. It has become an addiction.

Unfortunately but fortunately there is an insane amount of standing dead ash around here. I had 3.5 cords delivered last January . I got it stacked right away and the pieces I have checked have all been <20%. Since then I have found a lot more dead ash. That stuff dries so dang fast. My wood ID'ing skills are lacking so its nice being 3 years ahead knowing anything I pickup should have sufficient time to dry. I have a few areas close by I can cut dead ash next year if need be.

BS, congratulations on the baby news.
    That's a real exciting time.
How much wood do you anticipate using per year?
When we got here, it was suggested we'd use about 5 cords/year. That turned out to be pretty accurate, so I tried putting up 6 or more/year.
You know, just in case.....like last year.

I am in a 2200 sq ft old farmhouse. Newer windows and some wall insulation. I just got the attic up to R40 a few weeks ago, did some extensive air sealing, and had the rim joists insulated. I hoping for 4 cords. I have right around 12 stacked with about 5-6 of that being dry ash.

Congratulations, Beet Stix - a baby on the way is terrific news! Also great news on you being 3 years ahead. Sounds like you worked hard to provide a warm home for the (future) new arrival.

Congrats. Looks like great wood there. In a few years you'll have some help, just gonna have to make some of the splits are comfortable for little hands. :)

Congratulations! The hard work your doing now will pay off when the house is turned upside down for a while. Way to think ahead! Its a good position to be in when you scrounge out of want instead of out of need.

As someone that has no kids, I'll be sure to sleep in until noon for you. :D

But, from what I have seen from my brother's kid, if you keep them on a strict sleeping schedule, chit isn't that bad. But, if you are still worried about time, I would scrounge now and buck later, since the scrounging is what keeps you away from the house.

Though, there is no shame in buying. I buy all my wood.

And, spend fifteen minutes a days or as you can processing.
It gets done, albeit a bit slower.
