I have a 460 with a 20" and 24" bar. Needless to say, it is a cutting machine and runs great. I also have a 290 farm boss which I have had for 10 years or so.

Whenever I use the 290 I always feel less than impressed with it. I am starting to consider picking up another saw. What is a good pro series saw that would be good for smaller stuff? Stihl has been good to me but I am open to Husqvarna or other saws out there.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Oh 50cc for sure. MS261C-M or the 550XP. The 550XP in particular is most impressive out of the box. Would be a good one to try if you wanted an intro to Husqvarna. And my Stihl MS261C-M just gets stronger every time I take it out.

Husky makes a 545 which is a great quality 50cc saw, but having run one back to back with a 550XP, I noticed the power difference right off.

How small are you talking? I have a Jonsered CS2139t with a 12" bar (39cc) that I like which cuts well & the California version of it's brother - Husqvarna 338XPT (45cc) with a Holmen Tree styled muffler mod. I really like this saw. I haven't done a muffler mod on the Jonsered so I would have a "quiet" saw. 7.7 lb power heads.

Now that I think about it, the Dolmar 420/421 is great little saw too. Very inexpensive compared to the 550XP/261 but if it's for limbs, you won't need the grunt of those two. I was most impressed by the little Dolmar and for zipping up 6" limbs or smaller, it would prolly be my pick. They can be had for under $350 IIRC. If you're talking about something to handle the 8-14" trunks, I think I'd pick up the 550XP/261C-M.

The specs on the 550 look good. The 261 doesn't look far off from the 290 in numbers but I know that isn't the whole story. I was checking the 376XP till you pointed out the 550.

Are you more concerned with weight? Or do you want power? (Or both).

The new MS 260-C or 50 are the top 2 50cc contenders. They go head to head.

But that's not to say you couldn't go larger and run a smaller bar for less weight.
The 550xp will run great, but a 555 or 562xp will dominate a 16" or 18" and you can lean as hard as you'd like (would be the equivalent of a 20" on your 460!!)

The 555 is a detuned model of the 562xp. And for the money, would be a great saw. Only slightly more weight, and a lot more power.

After owning large saws, I can't hardly stand to run smaller saws. My smallest saw I use constantly is my 036 Pro, and it's 62cc. I run a 16" on it and that's my "Limber". :)

All in what you want (power or weight) and also your budget.

    Christmas is getting close.
    550xp, be a good choice
Probably leave the 24 on the 460.
    You'd be running the 550
    90% of the time.

Dolmar 510 or 5105 or the Makita equivalent.

As you have the MS460 ,and want a lighter companion saw ,how about a 562xp with a 20" tech lite bar ?
The 20" bar will give you a decent amount of reach to save your back . And the weight and balance make it a very nice combination to use for limbing and firewood work .

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I would like a lighter saw with more power than the 290. I like the specs on the 550XP but the 562 sounds nice. Maybe I could deal with more weight of the 562 for the trade off of the speed of the cut.

Dolmar dealers around my area are basically small engine repair shops that seem overloaded with work and focus on repairs of lawn mowers over chainsaws. The nearest husqvarna dealer isn't overly impressive but there are others further away that I need to check out.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

The 562 will make you really happy :)

Not to take away from the 550xp. But I like to cut fast. And the 562xp will cut plenty fast and you can use it for more than limbing. A 24' bar and chain, will give a nice saw with less weight than the 460. Which will be a well deserved break on your back, for days when you have a lot of cutting.

If you already have a 460 I'd go smaller than 60cc class...hopped up 260 with a 16" bar...or something along those lines. Plenty of snot and light enough to use all day.

I dare say a 550XP is gonna be faster than even a 562 in small wood. (Under 6"?). The engine on that thing revs to the moon. You guys gotta get your hands on these new 50cc'rs. This ain't your pappy's 026.

OhioSteel - you have a. Jonsered dealer near you? The 2253 is a 550XP in disguise.

The 550 is a heck of a saw to be certain . But, I've cut in some pretty small stuff ,and I just don't think that the 550 is faster . Having said that , in all fairness ,it wasn't done side by side . It was on different days . That, and I'm old ,and have intermittent CRS !

Well crap, I stopped by 3 dealers and nobody has a 550 to try on for size. There was a 562xp at one dealer but I wanted to check out the 550 as far as weight goes.

Called three more dealers, one went out of business, the second stop dealing in saws and the third does have a 550xp but has a personality of a rock. Maybe he was just having an off day. I can order the saw online but I have little customer support around me.

There is a chain of tractor stores near me that carry Husqvarna but didn't have a 550. They will be moving into a vacant auto dealer building soon. They will be my best bet for service.

    The search continues...

Dealer in Wellington has a 550xp and 562xp. Dealer in Grafton, had a 346xp (ne), or last I checked they did.

Or just pony up to the 562xp!?!
Plenty of power and still light enough to limb. A 16" and a 20"
