Things finally dried up enough here to get in and start work on this black locust. We dropped and bucked one up yesterday and still have two standing to get. We threw as much as we could in my buddy's truck and left the big stuff. After the other two are down and bucked, we'll take the splitter down and work on site. Should make for some good firewood. You can see the other two standing behind the bucked up first one. We pulled about a cord of wood out of this empty lot earlier this spring thinking it was standing dead elm, but it looks like the same wood once cut into. I'll have to split to tell I guess.
Nice score! It's too wet to do any cutting now. It sounds like I'll have a good amount of BL at some point this summer too. My cutting buddy's gf has a huge BL that is getting cut down by an arborist friend of his. We get all the wood from a 200 yr old or so tree. But I think it will be a summer scrounge, so it will be for 2016/17. It's great wood, holds a fire a long time. I never burned any until this year, as I got a few pieces from my buddy.
I'm surprised it is dry there but happy for you. We were dry but now wet. Lots of water in the woods.
Standing dead locust, just about as "stove ready" as you can get! Usually no branches/tops, and no or not much bark, (at least in my patch). I love the stuff.
That looks like good stuff and maybe red elm but I don't see locust, at least not black locust as it is yellow heart wood even when it is cut dead.
Red Elm is what we thought about the first stuff we took out. Of course it was standing dead a long time too with no bark. I guess I'll have to split some tomorrow and see. Some of the dead fallen small branches had a few thorns so I was going with black locust.

Split some of the wood in question this afternoon and took a couple of pictures. The standing dead (no bark) we got a couple of weeks ago is mulberry I think? This recent load shown in original post. Black locust? Something completely different?
I guess with the bark being off the trunk for so long, there are no thorns to help me identify it. There are some live black locust trees nearby so I was assuming.
I'm not into black locust but honey locusts & mulberry are in my jurisdiction.... I didn't think black locust was that bright yellow, but could wrong. But mulberry is pretty rot resistant too...
Oh sorry. No I agree the yellow inside is mulberry! I was talking about the locust. I could only differentiate them by the thorns and with the other black locust nearby I was assuming this was also.
