Looking to find some sort of tag to hang on the t-post of our single row stacks to identify what year it was CSS and maybe what species is there. Would need to last about 1year uncovered and 2 years in the shed..... I was thinking something like the tags nurseries use to ID their trees? Anyone know where to get someting like that?

Maybe ear tags for cattle??? Available at any farm supply store or local veterinarian. Weather resistant, bright colors, reusable, I think most have numbers on them but you could keep a cheat sheet someplace. #98=oak #47=cherry etc..... just the first thing that came to my mind, but I live in ranch country.

They could be wired to a post or nail/ screwed to a split. Put the date on cheat sheet which could be a dry erase board or chalk board in the shed. Even just the wall or board of the shed.

I've tried permanent marker, but it isn't so permanent. It fades away in the light.
Lately I've just taken pics. One camera has a date stamp right on the pic, but now I usually just use the camera on my phone as it is usually in my pocket, which has the date in the exif data which isn't hard to get to.

Okay make this easier! An index card in a used Ziploc sandwich bag with a sharpie.. this works for me because it's what the girls normally throw out:D nail to split above zip water seal..

Great idea. Ear tags do come n blanks. They will cost $18 to $25 at the farm store.

Right where I want to be.
bogydave does something like that, I believe.
Remove any errant chechup (yes, I know it's mis-spelled), mayo, or other unwanted detritus from bag first though.

Metal lids off soup, cat food, dog food etc cans. Use paint marker, not Sharpie. Nail it to a split.

So far this is the best, what color paint do you find to hold up best?

Yellow, get the paint markers they use at salvage yards. Stuff lasts a long time. Any welding/tool supply house should have them.

Letter/number stamp kit and soup can lids. I used sheet copper to label my fruit trees, will outlast the trees.

How about an electric engraving tool on some scrap metal. We used these to engrave our initials on our hand tools at work.
