I need to get a sprayer for the kubota utv. Main need is for spraying fencelines, so hand wand is main method. I don't know that I have much of a need for a boom, although if I had the capability (or could be added later) the reason or need might arise at some point. But for large jobs in the open (pasture etc), the fil has a big 3pt sprayer.... I've looked at them online to get an idea of what's out there. I'm guessing 15 gal minimum, 25/26 gallon is what I've kinda got my eye on. I have tractor supply, northern tool and harbor freight within an hours drive. Also southern states and home improvement type stores. I don't want tonspend crazy money, but I also don't want to buy crap. I've read about pumps with plastic housing vs metal etc, and of course all kinds of varying reviews.... Anyone out there have any recommendations, or 'stay-away-froms'?
... I currently have the Harbor Freight one. I lengthen the hose so I can get off and walk around areas that I cant reach while sitting. I've only had to replace the spray gun. But I rinse out well after each use... It gets used like 2 times a year, usually.
I have a 40 gallon from Tractor Supply. It has a slightly better pump than what comes on their 25. Love it. 40 gallons is way more than I want to spray in one “session” Get some cheap ppe. I have a long piece of survey ribbon so I can tell wind direction.
I can recommend not getting a "mix on exit" sprayer. I bought the Chapin 25 gal mix on exit. It has a separate tank for the chemicals and is supposed to mix the chemicals with the water before it enters the pump. On a UTV or ATV it doesn't mix reliably. I have places where the weeds are dying and places where the weeds are mildly sick and places where the weeds are green and healthy after a month. It works better on dead flat land but still not great. The idea is to keep the chemicals separate from the water tank so you can use it on say fertilizer and weed killer without worry. This also doesn't work because if you stop spraying it will siphon the chemical into the tank. I still use the Chapin sprayer, but I blocked off the tube going to the chemical tank and just mix in the water tank. For an ATV the 25 gal is as big as I would recommend. A large UTV could handle larger. Hope this helps!
I've had a FIMCO 65-gallon UTV sprayer for at least 7 or 8 years now. I've had a few minor hiccups with it, parts are still available from the manufacturer which makes it easy to fix. A few hiccups were because I didn't wash it out as much as I should have, and a few are because of the water diverter design. I use a 26 gallon unit from Northern Tool for my food plots. I put in the back of my RTV. It has a boomless 12’ sprayer and a hand held. I paid around $200 10 years or so ago.
I got a 40 gal Fimco from Tractor supply last year. It did come with a boom but I left it off. I mainly want it to keep fencerows in check and scrub brush/trees gone. I commercially sprayed for 13 years and was happily surprised how nice it is. It has on on demand pump, meaning it'll build pressure and shut off if not in use. Also has a valve to recirculate and mix/circulate which is nice. It was actually happy with how far the wand will get up into the high stuff. I have used the smaller ones and that was my complaint with those. They normally put them on sale so you can save quite a bit if you watch for that. I'd suggest signing up for ads to watch for that.
Thanks for all the replies! You know, as I read them I was thinking "oh maybe I should go 40 instead of 25ish..." but I really don't know how much it'd take to spray at a time.... I could always mix less in a 40 (I assume it has various gallon marks)... but I wonder how much it would slosh and rock, I'm assuming no baffles, but then again it's not really that much.. If you mix a batch, and don't spray it all in one go...how long are yall letting it sit (if at all)? Spray the next day? Within a week?.... Also, what are yall using for brush/sapling type stuff, like along fencelines? 2-4D, triclopyr...?
I use Crossbow and add a little 2-4D and surfactant. Crossbow takes a while to show effect but it does the best job I've seen. If you are cutting trees/brush and want them not to come back, brush paint the cambium area with Tordon. You can let it sit a week and be okay. Just flush/drain at the end of the season and bring into heated storage so it doesn't freeze anything. Some chemicals can get corrosive if you let them sit all Winter.
Spray my fences lines using a mix of glyphosate and 2,4-D. I try to use everything that I've mixed up that day or within a few days. Any leftovers I'll dump them into my backpack sprayer or a covered 5-gallon bucket. I left that mix in my sprayer and it messed up the rubber diaphragm on the pump (see my post above). They say all the parts can withstand various chemicals, but my guess is, not for an extended period of time. Clean mine out with water after every use, and then at the end of the season I use a chemical tank cleaner to do an end of year cleaning. I don't have heated barn, so I run R/V anti-freeze through mine and put it to bed for winter. I've been doing it that way since I got it haven't had any problems with the pump etc. breaking because it froze.
Went to northern tool one day last week. Wasn't impressed enough with what I saw to buy any of the sprayers. Most of them have the pump mounted on the side, with a plastic cover/shroud over them. Trying to figure out how it's a good idea to screw/bolt things to the side of a plastic tank (cause looked like the screws/bolt went into the tank), vs putting the pump on the top. Didn't get to stop at Tractor Supply, hopefully I can get back up that way soon.
My 40 gallon Fimco sprayer from Tractor Supply has the pump mounted on top. I think some of the smaller ones have pump on the side.
These were mainly the 25/26 gal tanks, don't remember if I saw a 40 there that day....if I did I'm thinkinf it was higher $ than I was wanting...
