When I first saw this I was unsure whether it was a splitting maul or a wedge shaped peening hammer. But I bought it anyway.

Now that I have it in my hands I am more certain that it is a very blunt splitting maul. It looks to be hand forged and a small version of a monster maul. It weighs 2.77kg (6.1 pounds).

    Has anyone seen anything similar?

I would lean towards a production made splitting maul head. The eye looks very clean and most likely punched out on a large press when the head was hot.

I was thinking it could be a slitter for grooving or splitting metal while forging, but the thickness from the eye to the flat part is not really thick enough for constant striking with a hammer.

It does look like a smaller version of the monster maul.

Sharpen it up, give it a 36" hickory haft, and see how it swings!
