2 below 0 here in Iowa this morning but little wind so I got a couple old Cherry blowdowns cut and split. Cherry usually splits easily and this did. It’s been barkless and off the ground for a long time so it will be going right into Dad’s boiler. Tried a couple old axes. The big one is a Keen Kutter 5 lbs felling axe and the smaller one is a Hults Bruk 3.5 lbs that I rehung (House Handle Co) for pounding wedges, primarily. The Fiskars X25 really outdoes them all for splitting but I realize the others weren’t made for it. The rootballs went right in this morning.
Nice work in cold weather. We had the same weather as you, I stayed inside all weekend, I hate the bitter cold! I like swinging some different axes no and again for some easy splitting rounds, but nothing compares to a Fiskers!
Nothing I have compares to the Fiskars for splitting. They rarely get stuck and really knock those rounds apart. I have broken the handle on an X27 on a bitter cold day splitting Oak but Fiskars promptly replaced the axe for me. I have had many over strikes and side strikes on this X25 but no handle issues so far. I like em!
Split nice and clean. When I hand split it was 50/50 whether it was twisty or straight grained. I did like my Collins axe when I hand split. The Fiskers "X" series are great too.
