Dealer near me had this out front for 800. They offered me a $500 trade in for my speeco, leaving a $300 difference. Anyone run one of these? I like the speeco, other than how low to the ground it is, and not having a log table. Seem like a decent deal?
I know the kinetic splitters are a lot faster but how do they do with twisted grain or knottier types of wood? Some of the ash around my place doesnt like to split easy
How much longer will you have ash? Any pieces not worthy could be noodled up with a saw. I too would take that deal as long as the DR is mechanically solid.
That's just it...seems like the only kinetic that really holds up long term are the Split Fires...$3-4k though. What kind of warranty will they give you on it? Personally, I'd just keep the Speedco and park it on car ramps if it's too low. As far as splitting the nasty stuff, can't speak for the DR, but the Split Fires will bang through about anything, at least eventually...that's hard on things though. I like a knife on a splitter better than a wedge, unless it's a real slow machine, then the wedge can save some time by opening the log up faster (negating the need for a full stroke sometimes)
A lot of the kinetic copycat splitters (brands other than Supersplit) were recalled for safety reasons. Things like issues with teeth breaking off the ram. My former BIL bought a TSC Speeco kinetic and it required two hands to engage the ram, and it came out too fast and shook violently. Made me appreciate my real SuperSplit even more.
I have a good amount on my property thats down but solid. Mostly ash, cherry, and poplar is what I burn.
I have to ask on warranty information, I know it was their splitter from their wood yard and not a customer trade in.
Seems like a fair trade to me. Will they let you try it first? Ive considered a fly wheel type splitter (actually have talked with Super split) and have wondered about the quality of other brands. Do a little homework before you do. Just my 2c worth.
I looked up the price of a split fire and more than a super split. Not sure which id get given the choice.
Personally, having used both...I'd go with the Split Fire...I do like the Supersplit, but not enough for that to be my sole machine.
Never have used either but have seen a super split run in person many years ago. Thinking the other would be better for an occasional gnarly log.
