Anyone found a good way to keep four way slip-on wedge from sliding off when retracting cylinder on Husky splitter? Edit: here's the pics
Ok back on track, so I'm assuming the splitter bogged out and the wedge got stuck then pulled out when backing out? Also is that bracket out the back all that's holding it on there?
Looked up reviews on it and it seems that people are saying it doesn't work well in vertical. Maybe something to do with that small bracket holding the weight of the round. Bracket on back is all that keeps it on. Comes with 1/16 inch cable to wrap around cylinder which is worthless. If log does not pop apart 4 way sticks in log and stays there on backstroke. If I was splitting dry wood it would probably work but do not need to split if dry. Thinking about using it to build new dedicated 4 way wedge and just change out by removing bolt from cylinder when needed.
A bit from the manufacture on the wedge, seems the one you have is only said to be used in softwoods. The Speeco LS 401460 4-Way Wedge System is a complete replacement for the existing wedge on your SpeeCo or Huskee log splitters. This design allows the operator to switch between 2-Way and 4-Way Wedges in seconds. It also offers two different 4 way split heights. This model works on 22t & 25t Splitters. Unlike The Speeco Slip on Wedge this one can be used on hardwoods. This unit weighs 69lbs. It is really well built.
It just does not work as is. Thought someone might have found way to attach more securely. Used on ash and elm which I would think would be considered soft woods. Haven't tried it on balsa wood yet but it might work on it.
I am guessing it is a horizontal/vertical splitter. One option would be to drill a 3/4 - 1" hole through both the 4-way & the standard 2-way wedge about 1/3 the way up & pin it in place. This will supplement the strap across the top of the 4-way which is bent in your photos
That would be a good solution, he had mentioned making it a dedicated 4 way so shouldn't be a problem
That was my first thought but there is no place to drill hole and put pin where ends of pin/bolt would not protrude onto splitting surface. Possibly a roll pin flush with the wedge could work but more trouble to change out. My son has the same splitter and he just fabricated and welded four way wedge wings to his factory wedge. No way to go back to two way.
Without seeing the 2-way wedge, another possible option would be to weld vertical strips to each side of the back of the 4way wedge so it will hook on the back of the 2-way wedge. It would be like having a horseshoe on the back of the 2-way wedge to cradle it.
That may be the solution. Will take some fabricating as wedge angle changes significantly behind the cutting edge covered by the four way. Flat strap formed to shape of wedge would not hinder splitting action and should give enough grip to pull four way back out of a tough log. Need to look tomorrow to see how far down strap can slide on back side before hitting cylinder ram. Fortunately we are set up with tools to build or modify.
