Nice day outside so I decided to fire up the new 27 Ton Champion Splitter...Now the first time I used it I split Horizontal(east to west) for about an hour with no problem....Today I have some beefy rounds I wanted to do so I flipped it up in the Vertical (North to south) position....Split great... but when I was done I noticed it was leaking hydraulic fluid...Do you think they over-filled it at the store??? In one of the Pics..you can see the drip.....Once again this was the very first time in the vertical position..Thanks guys..
It was way to hot to touch...I will tomorrow..It will be raining all day so I will tinker with it after work...
Mine did that and it was a small rubber o-ring that blew, two minutes and a new one and I was back at it.
Quick update...Just went out to see if it cooled downed...it did...Was able to tighten the one fitting roughly 1/2 to3/4 of one full turn....Wiped everything down and put a brown paper bag underneath to see if it still drips..Will check it in the morning...Pooped for now...4am comes awfully early..Haha..
I have a DHT which is made in the next room too yours Those clamps needed tightening all the time. Last time I changed the hydro fluid I decided to replace that clear hose. It was a good call. They harden from the heat and become brittle. I see two blue and one red stripe on yours. Maybe the red denotes heat capability? Not sure. Mine crumbled off. It was a non collapsible hose but I don’t think it was rated for heat. I just used a rubber hose from Napa and new clamps. Napa was worried the hose may implode from the vacuum. A valid concern. So far so good and no leaks,,,,,,from that hose anyway. Just something to keep in mind for when you replace the fluid. May want to have a suitable replacement ready to go.
Makes me wonder why they dont use threaded fittings for hydraulic lines. They would hold better than clamps. If one goes you would be unable to make a new line yourself. You would either have to wait for one to come in or keep spares on hand. Still think its a better option
It’s a non pressure supply line. It’s not so much a design flaw as a quality issue. At least in my case. Super cheap hose clamps and the hose was poor quality. Once it hardens sealing capability is out the window FWIW for reasons I’ll probably never know my machines hydraulics ran scorching hot when it was new. Time has seemed to lessen that. Is it possible the hydraulic fluid that came with the machine was also poor quality? Don’t know.
Where exactly did the o-ring blow...I'm thinking thats the problem..Ran it again yesterday...Horizontal...not a drop...Vertical...leaking like crazy.....Thanks..
Where exactly is the leak ? If it's the connection between the hose and the 90 that looks to be a 37° JIC fitting. If they are overtightened the taper crushes and leaks develop. Something appears to be changing when the operating position changes and I'm going to assume that a torque is being imposed on the connection. I'd suggest disconnecting the connection and inspecting the sealing surfaces and then if ok loosely put it back together. Then move it through the two positions while watching for any rotation of the hose. If you see any movement try and support the splitter with the movement at midpoint and carefully tighten the fitting.
Sounds like a connection, or fitting problem to me. Typically if the fluid is too full, it will back up into the tank and bubble up out of the fill cap. Most splitter caps are designed to blow off excess hydraulic fluid.
I added a link to your post above, Nordic Splitter.... and a screenshot of the “Problem Area” from the owner’s manual.
Finally..Problem solved..Amazing what a .20 cent O-Ring can do...They must have missed it in assembly...Leak is gone..Not even a drop!
