VIENNA – Austrian police investigating a grenade blast were less puzzled by the explosion and more by where it took place — inside a wood stove that appeared to contain nothing but firewood.

The woman who owned the wood burner also had no clue at first. After all, she only put firewood inside.

    Or so she thought.

Police spokeswoman Petra Datscher said Monday a World War II grenade apparently landed on a tree during fighting. It was then enveloped by wood growing around it to the point that it was invisible when the tree was chopped down for firewood and sold to the supermarket where the unidentified 22-year-old woman bought it.

The blast Sunday in the lakeside town of Gmunden shattered the stove's glass panel, but the sturdy wrought-iron stove prevented injuries.

Reminds me of what happened to an old neighbor of ours years back. He was this cantankerous old Yankee who'd burn his trash in his garage wood stove, including plastic! When wind was blowing in the right direction we would get the stench from it. Nothing worse during the Summer when windows were open. Well one day his garage caught fire. He put the trash in the stove, lit it, and left. Apparently an empty can of hair spray was mixed in which he didnt know and it exploded, blew the door open and catches garage on fire. Full of flammable liquids to etc. No one was hurt, garage a total loss. We were glad as we didnt have to smell his trash burning anymore. I think he stopped after that.

I wonder what wouldve happened if a chain saw hit the grenade while bucking the tree?
It'd give new meaning to having a blast while making firewood!
Cool story Dennis, thanks for sharing!

Dear Husband accidentally threw an alkaline battery on the fire a long time ago, it was too late by the time he realized it in the small cardboard box, we were paranoid all night even after shutting the air flow as low as possible. We were lucky but it was spooky. We scooped it out intact the next morning.

Wow, that does make you wonder what would have happened had it detonated in the tree.

Me and my brother played with an old inert WWII grenade my grandfather brought back from Guam with him 35 years ago. One day it landed in the neighbors juniper. We never found it. Will be an interesting day when somebody finds it. Mom still lives in the house.
