I have an app, that's been very dependable. It shows the real time strength in 15 minute intervals and forecasts a few days in advance. Let me turn on my tablet and check the times, standby...... Here is a picture of the app I use on my tablet.
A kp 5 or higher is a good number for our area. I have trees to my north and would need to get into a more open area to really see the show. Im new to seeing this, and I think I saw some a few weeks ago, but it was different than what ive seen in videos, which were time lapsed.
It is difficult to not watch the northern lights! One nice part is they are different every time. For sure when we lived in the UP that is a great place for viewing them and we noticed that fall and spring usually gave some of the best shows. I'll never forget one night when the entire sky was lit by northern lights and there was a lot of movement too. It was cold but the whole family spent a lot of time out in the yard that night. In fact, I woke everyone up and it seems the time was around midnight or a bit later. I know sleep was lacking a bit that night.
They rarely, but do, appear this far south. I have never seen them myself. I remember there was supposed to be an event and it was cloudy that night.
Unfortunately the kp is down to 2.65.......not looking too promising. Theres still tomorrow night and saturday night.
I've only seen the Aurora lights once, in the late 80's on the Western slope. Whole sky was lit up in red waves, really incredible. Next morning I shot a 30"+ mulie.
Every GD TIME the Aurora is visible here, it as been cloudy weather. We have had no rain for two months, now we are into our 4th straight day.
