Soft or hard maple?

Cuts like hard maple, splits like soft, I dunno

 

If the seedlings around it are an indication, it's hard (sugar) maple..

 

Thank you for quick response. The bark is a bit shaggy, which threw me off. Larger rounds split much harder also

Sugar. It has that unmistakeable silver-greyish color.

 

Sugar.. Maple usually Dosent split to hard unless you get to massive trunk that contains more than 1 tree..

 

Definitely sugar maple Woodsnwoods When nice and straight and fresh cut it does split easily based on my experience. Some of the urban ones ive scrounged are heavily knotted and crotched so lots of noodling!
