So you thought you owned your computer!

Yes, you purchased the computer and you have enjoyed a good part of it and it's programming. But did you know, you don't own it. This thing called TrustedInstaller does. Think I'm kidding? Take a look for yourself. Open your windows explorer. Then right click on the Windows directory. A little box opens, then click on Properties. Once that box opens, click on the Security Tab. There will be a listing there for all the users, and TrustedInstaller. Okay, now click on the advanced button and another box will open.

Click on the tab that says Owner. Yep, it will show TrustedInstaller. Not you or you as the administrator, but Microsofts TrustedInstaller. Now click on TrustedInstaller and see what permissions it has! Then check what the administrator (you) or the user has (you) You'll notice your permissions are limited, but the TrustedInstaller has complete control over your system and can change permissions as it sees fit.

It doesn't stop there. Microsoft wants everyone on board with Windows 10 and inserts upgrades/updates into your computer so that when the time comes, it's there. These updates are also very intrusive, but I don't know to what extent but they are associated with Windows 10 (KB3035583, KB2977759, KB2952664, KB3068708, KB3022345, KB3075249 & KB3080149) . There are other files GWX.exe and Sethc that have also proven to be problems. Well, at least for me.

Even if you turn off the Windows Updater, it will still download those updates regardless. The updates are associated with Windows 10. (I for one don't want it.) I noticed an exceedingly high CPU usage and needed to see what the heck was going on. I opened the Resource Monitor to see what was going on. Well, one of the things that was always running whenever I checked was this TurstedInstaller and the Updater was almost next to it with a lot of transfer of information, both in and out.

After revoking most of the TrustedInstaller's permissions, even removing it from most areas it had control of, and re taking ownership of my computer, disabling the updater, and removing the updates in question along with the sethc folder, my computer has returned to normal.

As far as I'm concerned, I will not turn on the updater for any reason, and will periodically check to make sure this TrustedInstaller hasn't once again taken over my computer. My computer no longer overheats and shuts down in the middle of something due to the updater and TrustedInstaller along with any of that Windows 10 junk. I guess you could say I poked so many holes in TrustedInstaller (it can't be totally removed, but can be disabled to a degree) that it just can't function. I would prefer it be totally gone, but until I can figure out how, I guess I'll have to tie it down where it can't do a thing without MY permission!

If you have Vista, or any other version of Windows since that point, TrustedInstaller is on your computer, like it or not. (as the owner)

I know your right! The Windows OS is basically a pile of chit and stinks about as bad.

I ran TOS and DOS long before Windows ever came to be on a huge (measurement wise) 10 meg hard drive. Where floppy disks really were floppy. Single sided, single density. And going online at 128 baud was commonplace (connecting the the old BBS's). I likely had the only Commodor 64 that had a hard wired hard drive with memory chips stacked as high as I could get them. Enough where I couldn't get the cover back on! I had the TI99, Apple IIe, Commodor Vic20 & 64 and 128. And the first Amiga's. I used to make parts for the Boroughs 500 (punch card type) until it was upgraded to the Omni 5000 running dual disc packs (about 18" in diameter by 3 to 4 inches thick each) which was basically a hard drive and a 300 baud modem (lightning fast compared to the 128 but still slow as molasses in January)

Nope, I'm not a Nerd Or a Geek. Just someone who has been in this, since way before the Internet and Windows.

My wife used punch cards when she was in college.....I have no experience there.
My real intro to computers (although I'd used them before that), was in late '94, and by the following spring, I was building my own. DOS first, then windows on top of it.
    All......those......floppies...........:headbang::)
I'm a newb in comparison. I highly dislike MS and their high handed antics. Most folks don't know any better, nor do they care.

I'm one of the last holdouts at work not on 10 yet. My computer was the last one to get updated about two years ago and is still current enough to run all our stuff. My bawse cussed for weeks after he got on 10. I will resist until I no longer have a choice. No PC at home, all done on phone.

I use VISTA, and won't go to 10, or any upgrade for my home pc. I use Android/ Google/ Linux on everything else.

Just like when you put pictures on Facebook, they are not yours anymore. On Google they are still yours.

I have XP on the laptop I use to store my Embroidery Designs as well as programs for digitizing others. My other laptops (2) came with Windows 7 and that is as far as they go. I will never do Windows 10.

I refuse to be one of those who are complaisant and just accept things as they are. If it's free, yet being shoved down my throat, I want to know why? If it's mandatory, touted as being affordable, I want to know why? And if I can find a way around it all, especially if I don't like it, I will find a way. (attack and conquer - seek and destroy)

I had originally put an end to that popup thing to get Windows 10, but soon I found an awful lot of activity on my computer that I couldn't explain. The first program to get locked down was Incredimail. If I did a search on my computer, it was running right next to windows explorer. If I did a search on the internet, it was right there at the top basically recording everything. If I went into a forum such as this, there it was again. It would gear up as soon as I typed something. I determined it was copying anything I typed and sending it somewhere so I finally decided it had to go. I had that program for years, but it had been compromised. Who knows, perhaps it was Windows 10 applying it's underhanded tactics.

While watching all of this and playing with different programs to see which ones activated Incredimail, I also noticed other things running in the background. Once I eliminated Incredimail the activity just got worse. I started finding out what those programs were, and why they were running. The more I dug, the more I found my computer was being prepared to accept Windows 10 without my authorization.

I didn't want Windows 10 for many reasons including too many bugs straight out of the box. Add that it's free yet being shoved down my throat. (I'm not one of those Gimedats in the land of entitlements) Then there is the spyware aspect. Windows 10 is spyware going though all of your personal files and disclose that information as they deem necessary. (look in the service agreement - "We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders, when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to.") Sorry, I value my privacy and I will not give personal information to anyone that I don't know let alone someone or organization I can't even see. Least of all letting some unknown just take it! So the question is, could it be this is the beginning of "Big Brother?"

When I decide to upgrade, it will be to Linux, and not Windows anything!

What is the little Gizmo's name? Not that I need it now, (I have control of everything on my computers!) but some others on here might be interested.

Probably HiJackThis. Can stop anything from running after it does a quick scan and tells you what is currently running.
