As I posted in my thread Oak coming soon. I have a big oak to cut up that came down at work, plus the one next to it. After I got home from work the kid took the misses with her to go shopping so I tossed the bar and new chain on the 372XP and went over to start cutting it. I have not walked up to it yet... It's a lot bigger then it looked driving by, ball park 60 foot tall, and the limb wood is 8+" dia. Didn't load anything today just started in on cutting it, only had about 30 mins of light left after I got there and got the saw started. When I got there. Limb. Gonna be a fun one to finish getting off the stump and on the ground... Got a start at least. The one next to it that is coming down after this one is cleaned up... I think it's even bigger. I got to say, been a while since I have really gone and cut, cutting that limb wood up in the air with the 372 and 24" bar really works the muscles that haven't been used in a while. What kinda oak do y'all say this is?
When the limbs are the size of small tree's you know you're gonna have a good time! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
From the cut off limb it almost looks like sassafras. It is deceiving how big a tree is from a distance. I thought the maple i grabbed yesterday was smaller from a distance.
I just looked it up and sassafras doesn't grow in Wisconsin any more. Just looked up some photos of it and it does look very similar!
Redneckchevy Are you supposed to get a bunch of snow Friday-Saturday? The weather guessers are calling for 8-12 here in central WI. Hope you can get it out of there before that.
They were calling for it, but it kinda sounds like it shifted more south, eau Claire is supposed to get 10" but sounds like we may only get 1-3, I would be happy if it shifted south more and misses us completely.
I thought so too. Here’s a large one I found recently: Any leaves by yours? It definitely looks like white oak family with that darker heart wood.
When the time comes to drop the trunk, make sure you have some limb wood under it to keep it off the ground when bucking.
Goes without saying but I will anyway, be careful on that trunk ! I come across them and hook a 30 kinetic rope to my truck and giver heck, sometimes you can get lucky and pop it loose.
No leaves by it. That's a good idea. Ya extra caution will be used cutting the trunk free, I'm watching any and all movement well cutting the limbs as well. I was wondering about burr oak as well. There was 3 there, the first one broke off last year, this one went down this year, and the 3rd one will be taking down by me, all are the same kinda tree.
Well you have a good saw there and it should get the job done. What ever wood that is it sure looks like it will make good firewood.
Never heard of that one. Edit. I just looked that up. It's just a pin/ red oak. There's a ton of red oak on northern Wisconsin where he's at. If you say "oak" and "any bit of the state outside of the southern most part" it's red oak.
