So I finally broke down to try to actually get that darn hard water ring clean on the toilet this morning. I went to Google to start my search. I cant use hard chemicals since we live on septic system. My search went into more of that direction of natural cleaners... I came across one that directed me to vinegar, and baking soda... And another one that was talking about Lemon juice, and the use of pumice stone. I just happened to have a big glass jar of Lemon peels soaking in vinegar from the summer of fighting chicken mites in the chicken coop. I soaked the stains and after some elbow grease, got all the ring cleaned up. Then took some car wax (found that on google too) and applied that to a dry toilet bowl. So how do you all keep that darn thing clean with hard water and on a septic system...

Used commercial cleaners on ours for 25 years on a septic system with no problems. Figure what little you use an the amount it gets diluted down to ain't gonna hurt that chit any!

I drink some whiskey, and just stand there and pee until the ring starts to disappear. Run outta ammo, more whiskey, repeat until ring gone. :D

Had a bit of one forming on a seldom used toilet here. Shut the water off, drained the bowl, soaked ring in some CLR or Lime Away or similar stuff for a few days. Twice a day or so, slop some more of it on there. Worked fine.

Guess it comes from hard water??
    Started drinking whiskey without water......!

Have you thought about getting a water softener? We used to have a hard buildup of calcium on the glass shower door but after installing the softener it's not much of a problem at all now.

The Works is what I use. I'm on my own septic system too. No issues.

It turns out the main ingredient in the works is the same as boat hull cleaner. It's much cheaper than the boat stuff and works just as well. It dilutes in water, and that neutralizes it. It says it's safe for septic systems. The Works 32 oz. Toilet Bowl Cleaner 03310WK at The Home Depot - Mobile
