Got about 9/16" more snow last night. Almost 3/4" in 3 days ! Had to use the leaf blower to clear the deck. Push broom for the driveway. Stack got covered in snow .
Maybe I need to head farther North. LOL March is usually a heavy snow month, maybe we get some then Over 9 hours of Sun now. + 5 m : 40 sec/ per day Every 11 days is an hour gain.
Maybe move to Ohio, we have about 6" here in Southern Ohio! Should all melt this week, we can only hope.
BD, can't believe we have more snow than you! We have had snow cover all winter this year. The roof is scaring me a little this year, really piled up. Don't ever remember it like that. The Chimney roof flashing skirt, that has some ventilation holes under it, is all covered up. But I don't think it is a problem since it is so cold. I checked it a couple of times and nothing is getting to hot.
We've had a lot of roof collapses around. I believe the typical roof is meant to hold around 2ft snow. Anymore than that, might be too much. More pitch up north, build to a different code, I don't know? I know just my woodshed beam is bowing alittle. Our issue around here is rock salt. Nobody has any for a couple weeks now. Penndot ran out and gets first dibs on supply. Pa is ordering emergency supplies via train. My deck and walkway have 2" + ice. Ashes work well for traction.
BD...have your temps been unusually warm, and precipitation unusually low, like the rest of us out West?
WS, Building codes require snow loads for roofs based on a map. Of course the required snow load never takes into account the extremes, so anyone can be in jeopardy when the extremes occur. Smart thing is to build to beyond what the code requires, but no one even wants to just meet the codes......they think we are costing them money. Us who heat with wood know the codes are there to protect us. The average citizen just looks at codes as government meddling in their lives.
Had a warm January. The last 2 weeks have been below average temps & a lot drier than average, a few dustings is all. Hopefully March brings snow. Though our mountains have a good snow pack from snow earlier in the year. Salmon streams should have adequate water. Jet stream was being held N & West by a big pressure area centered over Alaska & the Yukon That is changing. More normal Jet stream for us, may help Northern CA some too. Some warmer weather to be headed our way and to the mid west by the end of the week. Northern CA may get some rain, not much though. The Seattle area of course will see rain. & the Cascades will get even more snow & avalanche troubles. When are your monsoons gonna happen ? I was there one Dec, the whole place flooded, golf courses closed . No tropicals hit you this fall ? Has water rationing started ? Water pipelines may be in the future, who to grow the USA lettuce in the winter if AZ & CA don't ? I read, with a more normal winter hitting the North Mid West, the Great lakes are back to good water levels with a good chance of lower water temp helping them stay full for the summer.
Had plenty of snow, just it all melted a few weeks ago. Didn't snow here Saturday night. We got about 3" on Friday and Saturday afternoon though.
Sure has been a weird winter overall...Southeast gets pummeled, and the west is warm and dry. No water rationing here yet, but I hear that it is happening in CA. Worried that we will have a doozy of a fire season next summer.
Still below freezing with single digit temps tonight.. Later in the week going to warm up and hit 50 by Friday.. After that who knows?
That's getting pretty drastic when you have to measure snowfall in 16th of an inch! Come one down Dave. Snowing like crazy here. Maybe 6" before this one is done. Not sure where I am going to push this one though as we are running out of room.
