Just got back home after a few weeks. Interesting thing I noticed when looking over the wood piles just now. The river birch I put up a few months ago has a very noticeable “snap crackle and pop” sound coming from it. I say that bc it’s sounds just like the cereal if you stand near that stack and are quiet. I’m assuming it’s some sort of insect. Any thought?

It could have been bark beetles I heard munching away. It’s an old dusty memory from when I lived in the sandhills of NC.

If bark beetles, would you figure they’ll vacate the wood at some point ?

I suppose they'll slow down in the cold.
Neat sound though. I feel as if I've heard that from.wood in the past too.

Typically the bugs loose interest when the wood dries out.

Reminds me one time a brother-in-law made some walking canes when he was in Arizona and he gave one to me. Looked nice but later I thought I heard something and sure enough, something was inside it chewing. I threw it in the fire.

Pour some milk on the stack and see if it still makes the noise?

Could be buggers/grubs feasting? Cold and fire gets rid of them. Kind of the norm for firewood.

I’m sure it is the norm, makes sense. I just never noticed that before. Never knew my wood stack could be part of this nutritious breakfast.

I’ve heard them in some pine rounds I had years ago. The sawyer down the road has some chewing on a few logs right now.
Somethings making sawdust out of my red maple collection. Not hearing any chewing tho.
