    40° now
    24 hour + burns
In the low smolder mode again
Using the splits that don't stack as tight , no fan 1.9 on stat
Will reload around 10,---- 7/8 loose load.

thin coating of black 3/4 the way up the glass

Had some mild black on the glass this a.m., but after running the stove fairly hot, it mostly went away.
What kind of heat (temp) do you get from that setup?

Mah bad, Dave. I meant the stove.
Trying to wrap my head around how much heat is coming off the BKs and for how long.
As an example, the 30 was kicking out about 550 last night before bed, and now down to about 200.....7 hours later. Not quite a full load.
26 outside and 67 in here this am.
If I had a stove that would maintain a higher temp a bit longer in the cycle, I'd be a real happy camper.

I use to be real anal when it came to clean glass but over the years I've learned to just enjoy the heat over a nice flame show.

We'll probably look for a happy medium. With this stove the heat will never be the limiting factor.

I have a direct line of sight to the stove, and I like watching the fire. The glass usually takes at least several days to get bad enough to bother with cleaning.
It's extremely easy to do when it bothers me.
If it doesn't clear with a hot fire, a damp cloth/paper towel, then a quick dry. Maybe a minute.
Happened again with the overnight fire last night, and with this morning's fire, the glass is almost clear. No intervention on my part, other than the fire I made.
Gooder to go for a while.

No idea of actual stove temps.
    Cat temp probe is labeled " in-active " & " active "

The stat regulates the stove temp ,
more /less inlet air by the temp , on the back of the stove. range is "O thru 3.5 "
At 40 ° OAT, mine runs good at 1.8 -1.9 area. low for my set up
(below 1.8 is the smolder mode, a little heat for a long time )

My glass looks the same. A dark amber film from the bottom to the air wash. Weird. Usually I get the vee shape like a butt crack down the middle. The full amber glass still allows me to see the coals but I use a flashlight to check fuel level.

    23 degrees out this morning.

At first I thought it was high moisture content in the wood.
But burning 3 years seasoned , dry birch, still get black glass, just the nature of the beast .

Sometimes the heat dragon eyeball look:

BogyDave that is also what we got the first few times we put a fire in our new stove. We have yet to put a full load in like you have in the pic. For now (because it is mild and we are well insulated) we have been putting 4 splits in -3n/s and 1e/w on top of the 3 and it holds about 5-6 hours and the family room where the stove is hits about 80-85. The glass stays pretty good. Since after we clean with damp towel and ashes we then use stove top cream before the next time. This way it comes clean a lot easier when I do get at it. Our wood is 3 yr min so its not likely gassing off enough to be a big factor. Guess every stove and each of us are all a bit different. These days the house stays good until next afternoon. Our BR is cool anyway so we just close the door and then have our coffee and reflection time in a warm room.

Honestly when you finally buy a princess you will be blown away. After 7 hours a load in a BK is just getting started.

Here is a load after about 8 hours. This load went about 26 hours, the sst was about 200 when I reloaded.

    Jeesh, that much wood left?
What kind of stove temps when running like that?
    That's just phenomenal.

Think it was a little over 400* after 8 hours. It will usually run in the 300-400 range for a long time. That wasn't a full load of really good wood, 2 bigger oak splits and a small one, the rest was silver maple and cherry.

So, if you were to turn up the stat a little, it would run at 500, just for a little less time?
If that's the case, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for.
Been checking CL almost daily, but no one seems to want to part with a newer BK. Wonder why?

Honestly I don't think you will need 500 once you have a stove that is steady for a long period. Even when we have teen type weather a 450 stove top will add heat into the house with the blowers on.
