I’ve been driving past this sassafras limb since tropical storm Isaias brought it down in August 2020. Hearing that the wood is somewhat rot resistant, I wasn’t in too much of a hurry to scoop it up. This morning I had a few minutes to spare so I decided to have a go at it. After bucking most of the limb, I see I should’ve gotten it sooner. I kept the best of what’s there anyway. There’s a couple days of shoulder wood for me here. For some reason I have a fetish with scoring wood I haven’t gotten before. At least now I can scratch this one off the list. I’ll probably burn this in the fall of 2022.

Im the same way and i wouldve stopped for that too. The sassy you saw when you grabbed that elm held onto the bark when i split it earlier this month. Itll hold the bark longer than BL in the round.
I have some in lumber form and not sure what outdoor projects its destined for. I have a wheelbarrow chassis that i may use it for.
Did you sniff the ends? Love the aroma!

    I DID! :D
Up until today I've only smelled the leaves and scratched the surface of the bark too. It's definitely got an odd but pleasant smell to it.

Being older (i forgot Isaias was two Summers ago) it may not smell as strong.

It smells like a spicy citrus to me. Got tons of the stuff around here on the shore and it's great to have for kindling. I never pass on the sass!

How does it burn? I'm not expecting to be blown away by it, but if there's a pleasant smell while burning (like cherry) that would be kind of a novelty thing.

It's not particularly dense stuff, as I'm sure you can tell. Goes up pretty quick, has some crackle and burns hot. I don't recall what the odor is like when it burns, I just know I could split the stuff all day because it smells so nice.

I’m burning up about three cord of it between the three stoves this year. Just happens to be what I had a glut of three years ago. Burns nice, pretty hot, lights off fast, and disappears fast with little coaling. :)

Everyone's nose is different. I think sassafras smells like root beer.

    Decent shoulder wood.

I took a small cookie from this score, chopped it into smoker sized pieces and brought it into work for a coworker friend. He was more than happy to try it out and thought it smelled amazing.

Awesome score! Remember it's a hallucinogen so don't sniff *too* hard or start licking it. hahahahahaha.

Sassafras is a favorite. Smells great, is super light, splits uber easy, takes off fast when burning, burns a big flame. As a kid boy scout, took some of the roots, boiled it and made "root beer" drink. As far as "looks" go, I think it's a looker. I would sure love to find a big one down but big ones are rare here.

Another small jag of sassafras this afternoon, bark mostly rotted off, with some very solid dead ash skinnies and a couple random lengths of young black oak. The sassafras is soft in the center since I found it sitting in a roadside drainage ditch, but once quartered and stacked it should make okay shoulder wood.

Thanks, it belonged to my late grandfather. I actually just ordered a new scabbard for it which should be in next week. I believe this one is original and is pretty chewed up after almost 40 years of use.

I really hope this is still here tomorrow. My truck is loaded heavy with white oak right now, otherwise I would’ve gone to town on this stuff. This would be the most sassafras I’ve ever gotten. There’s young red oak and sugar maple here too, but right now I’m fixated on the sassy. Stay tuned…

Bet your boots I already grabbed what little I could fit in between the white oak quarters. Tomorrow will be a full load of sassy if it's still there. Don't know where I'm going to put it but I'm not gonna pass it up :dex:
