I am debating a small pellet stove in my upstairs to help on the real cold nights. Are there any little stoves made for 400 to 500 sq ft ?

    Thanks Fellas

You are a "common sence" kind of guy so my recommendation would be to get a small Englander. Shop around, Craig's list, rebuilts. Good deals on the web even with shipping. You said you wanted it "upstairs" so remember, no bedroom installs. You can download any stove manual to ck out the installation for any unit you are interested in. While most have a lot in common, some have different requirements such as the type of pad the stove sits on.

What's your budget? The Englander25-pdvc, while short on looks, was a great heater for me. It might be a bit too much for an upstairs unless you are trying to heat a very large space. The upside is, like save$ said, one could probably be had for fairly cheap used.

A 25 PDVC will be way too much for 4-500 sq ft, even on low, low.
Lowes now sells a window unit, I cant speak for it but....I think it is rated for 700sq ft

If its near the bedrooms and your a light sleeper, I'd look at quite ones. Enviro mini is very quite besides the tinkle of pellets falling. Another is the Enviro empress but its not as quite as the mini.

We don't really have a budget yet I am trying to get prices still. The budge will get set once we know what we are looking at. Window units are not an option ! My buddy has been through three of them they are junk and burn through very fast.
The craigslist idea is great I hadn't thought of that. Thanks guys keep the info coming please !

Hmm I like the look of that stove ! The tinkle won't be a big deal to me it would probably knock me out. The wife on the other hand.....

Really it would only be used in the dead of winter on really cold nights. Our stove does a fantastic job of heating the house in 99% of winter.

The hum of the fan motor is all I hear, but it is there. I have fallen asleep in front of my stove many times while sitting in a recliner. The pets don't seem to mind it.
The one thing that you want with any pellet stove is access to parts and advice. I don't know anyone who does that better than Englander.

The window units are known disasters. Aren't even the smallest stoves rated around 30k btu? Besides they can be turned down.

Yes, and the empress is 30,000 IIRC. I haven't seen to many much smaller.

Even the PDVC which I believe is one of the lowest BTU outputs (may be incorrect) on 1-1 blows me out of a cathedral ceiling'd 350 sq ft room.
I just think it may be too small of a load for any stove.

Any of the small stoves that have on/off capabilities I think would suffice. Enviro mini or maybe St Croix Element or Thelin Gnome (not sure if its on/off or not) would fit the bill I would think

As long as it does On/Off, then it could be 50,000 BTU unit.

Any Quad would work (specifically the Santa Fe and Castile), the Heatilator PS-35 or PS-50 are very affordable (even brand new), any of the Enviros mentioned above, or the newer Gen Englanders from http://www.amfmenergy.com/manufacturer-refurbished-stoves.html will work also.

As long as it will turn on or off by a stat? It will work. Used will be cheaper, but expect to do a good cleaning because someone failed to clean it properly.

What is your "local" CL area?

How about a little “Gnome” 27k BTUs rated for 750 sq ft?
    Height: 34″
    Weight: 129 lbs
    Diameter: 19.25″
    Door opening: 8″ x 10″
    Exhaust vent: 3″
    Exhaust to floor o.c: 11.25″
    Hopper Capacity: 26 lbs
    Footprint: 18.5″ square

It can run entirely off Solar Panels!
Robert Beck, Design Engineer has successfully engineered what could be the lowest carbon foot print heating system in existence today (next to the sun itself). Consider this heater operates by burning renewable wood pellets made from recycled wood chips. It uses just 37 watts of electricity and will run continuously with a 60 watt solar charging system and 12v battery. Now that is a "green" heating system.
