I hope some of you have prior experience to head me in the right direction, pun intended. I am considering adding a pair of skegs to my kayak. Have any of you done this, how, where, size, help!?!? My kayak is a sit on style that is 10' long and unlike myself, it is very stable. The problem is it is so broad bottomed making it stable however that it doesn't track well. My plan is to marine epoxy and rivet a couple 3 inch skegs about 18 inches from the rear of it. Would a keel be better? Am I locating them correctly? Help!
Rivets might become a leak point. Personally I use plastic cutting board from from harbor freight to make skegs for my kayaks. They don't rot, and are slippery and tough. If you Google my sawfish foam kayak tutorial, it describes how to attach this type of plastic to anything . Regular epoxy doesn't stick to plastic very well, however West system makes a type called Gflex that is specifically made to repair plastic kayaks
It is beyond paddling better. I have been in multiple kayaks and have no problems until I get in mine. Tracking and weathercocking are just terrible. I have even contemplated adding a keel or a little balast to force it to set lower in the water. My kayak is a little longer and broader than average and it is 5 years of trying to compensate my paddling and making no advance so I am giving something else a try because the course I have been on has been half cocked.
Have you looked into adding a rudder system? Skegs make turning difficult, rudder make course easy to keep or change
Haven't looked at rudder too much. How do you alter direction, cable system or a handle like a boat motor?
