I had considered wrapping a brick in aluminum foil but since I recently got a new cordless Makita 4 1/2 inch angle grinder and an amazing (!) Lennox diamond cut off wheel, I just had to put them to use. Plus the thought of blowing $20 on something this simple just bugs me.
Once a cast iron comal, now a handy bacon and pork chop flattener. The weight I think is perfect, heavy enough to flatten stuff but not too heavy where it would smoosh out the juices.
Quarter-sawn White Oak warmed to 160 F in the oven, treated liberally with hot bees-wax/food-grade mineral oil mix. The flattener balances well and keeps the hand plenty far from the heat. Time will tell how the oak holds up - up against the hot cast-iron.

Good Idea. Looks nice. Probably also work well for flattening venison butterfly steaks! I always have trouble with them pooching up in the center.
