So I bought this 460 last year from @MasterMech and really loved the saw. The saw was a project saw for him testing a big bore kit and a few other things. He even repaired a hole in the cylinder. When I bought it he said if I have a problem just let him know. So this year it started leaking bar oil into the cylinder and smoking like crazy. He took it home from the g2g and split the case and rebuilt it. Wow I love this saw, cuts like crazy and really digs into those big logs. Really want to say thanks to him. Great guy that stands behind his work. I would recommend anyone that is interested in anything he does and to buy from him. This is the kind of person that really makes this such a great place. Also thanks to @DexterDay for the big dogs! image.jpg

Good looking out Swags. Of course we have heard nothing but good things about MM. He might just move into a new category on FHC .... "Living legend". :)

MasterMech is the man and helped me get started really messing with saws.
Leaking case gasket, eh? After reading about this one, I decided to stick with OEM on my most recent rebuild. How's that big bore kit been running?

Having witnessed it myself, I can say he is a good and genuine friend. One I am proud to have.

When we were at the GTG. Sean was telling both of us about what it was doing...

MasterMech ran the saw for 30 seconds and shut it down and said " It's going home with me. It has a leaking case gasket letting bar oil in the crank." I was impressed myself.

As for the Dogs? I owed you big time for that weekend bro.. The dogs and the saw were nothing compared to what you did for me.

It's a band of brothers.. A bad azz band of brothers!

Be careful with those dawgs.  I can't tell if there is a bottom spike hanging down? I had a set on my 460 and that bottom spike seemed to get hung up constantly. They worked good, but I have two holes torn in my chaps from them and one of my workers tore a hole in his leg (went through his chaps).
Also I couldn't use the saw case anymore because the dawgs took up too much room.
I was going to cut the bottom one off, but someone offered to trade so I did. I have a normal Stihl set like what comes on the 660 and 880. Larger than stock but seem to not try and kill me.

I'd need to pull my 460 apart, it leaks bar oil pretty bad when stored... like empties out after a day or two. My 660 sat on a corner of my bench all winter with fuel and bar oil and didn't even make a drip.

Oh also the big dawgs tend to bend easy if side loaded.

Mine got bent, maybe from one of my guys and I was stupid to try and bend them back. I ended up cracking the case.

Thanks guys. I like those spikes on that saw. Just adds to the whole attitude of that machine, which started out as a box of spare parts from another build, a colossal mistake on my part (hence the hole in the crankcase that was repaired), a relatively inexpensive aftermarket rebuild kit, and a big "Hmmm".

Saw ain't no beauty queen but it is a runner for sure. I also converted that oil pump to the HO or "R" pump. Should oil that 32" just fine for ya Swags!

Just wish I knew some more about porting, I think that cylinder had some potential.

MM, do you have any idea why the gasket failed?

Inferior aftermarket part. Exposure to oil softened the gasket and it allowed the case halves to loosen up and start to leak. It was the only part in the "kit" that failed but Sean's saw now has OEM seals and gaskets.

Wow. That doesn't even look like a gasket anymore.

You think it will oil a mill if I run one? Or should I look into an additional oiler if I get a mill?

I would defer to someone like @mdavlee or @trx250r180 who has experience milling with a 460. Oil delivery is noticeably better with the HO upgrade but I have no idea if it's enough for milling.

It will oil a 32" bar decent milling with the HO oiler. The regular output is barely OK with a 28".

I have the h/o on all my saws ,the 460 and 660 actually share the same pump for those that did not know that ,On my mill i run an aux oiler on anything wider than 6 inches ,My bar was heating up and burning the paint ,and i would get chain stretch if milling 12 inch or bigger slabs without extra oil ,I also run winter grade bar oil in the aux oiler ,It flows in the hose better than the reg stuff .If you are just cutting a few boards ,may not need the extra oiler ,If running for hours on end ,I recommend one .
