Today, I've opted to keep the fire going for overnight temp drop in the next few hours. So, I just keep the fire going minimally and have a window cracked. Somewhat wasteful of wood, but I don't have that much money invested in the wood itself since the saws and fixed costs are covered. A little for gas, maintenance, chains, and bar oil I guess. I don't like letting the fire go out and having to restoke a cold stove. My soapstone stays fairly warm even after several hours, but the initial lighting is a hassle. I'm trying to burn the punkier wood that has been touching the ground for a while. I have enough pallets now to get everything off the ground, but I wan to move the old inventory before it rots.
This morning's fire went out a few hours ago, and I just reloaded with a few pieces of Pine. I don't mind the relight too much, but for some reason, this one's not cooperating........spoke too soon......it's going now as I type.
I love the pine provided that it's sufficiently dry. It is sappy, but I wouldn't discredit it as so many do. I have some spruce logs that I'll be splitting up soon.
Welcome to FHC savageactor7 ! Yea, shoulder season here too... Do I light or not light? Like I should have this morn, but didn't....
I light and open the window to air the place out. Being in here 24/7 and getting rid of the odors is the best.
I have no problem with keeping a fire going during the daytime at this time of the year except if the temperature gets well into the 50's the fire can go out. It is easy to get a new fire going and one reason we still keep a bit of kindling around along with super cedars. Welcome to the forum savageactor7.
Your wood is the pinnacle of dry enough to light easily. I'm getting better but not quite at that low of moisture content.
Yea being selective & burning some uglies mixed in with better stuff. Not a tight load, more air with the uglies mixed in. burning 24/7 but on low slow. 24+ burns. 36° now , high was 51°. House get a bit warm in the after noon but feels good to open the doors & let the old winter air out LOL
Totally agree. Love having some fresh air for a change. Stove helps air the place out while adding some much needed fresh breeze.
Thanks for that. I'm getting there. 2015 will be a break-0ut year. I have a cord of maple that will be well under 20% by winter and much more random mixed hardwood left over too. I'll be on the 3 year plan soon enough. It's so much easier to light wood that has been sitting around for awhile and alot of fun to gather and split all summer.
My stove is in the basement. My rule of thumb is if its warm in the day, but cold at night, I will keep the fire going as long as it doesn't make the upstairs overly warm. And I too hate relighting.
Sounds good to me. Today it was very warm, but I lit the fire this evening. I'll get this going hot and then let it burn out till the evening tomorrow.
