I have been getting along fine for many years using my stihl 029 super with 18 inch bar. I did just take it in for a tune-up today as it didn't want to run smooth (no saw for a week - there goes my plan to finish cutting up my log pile this weekend; obviously, a good reason to consider getting a second saw).

For those of you with multiple saws, how are you using them?

Cutting between 3 and 6 cord/year. If you had the 029 super what would you consider a good second saw?

Or, based on the amount I am cutting, should I just stick to one saw.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I use a stihl ms170 for branches and smaller stuff and the husq372 for everything else. Definitely a good idea having a second saw...... and then 3,4,5........

1 saw has worked for you till now. What's changed? Maybe it's just time to upgrade the old farm boss.....

Everyone needs 2. You can cut yourself out of a pinch with the other one. Even if it's a wild thing:saw:

perhaps I have been reading too many signatures here and the war between "want" and "need" is raging in my mind :)

I think two saws minimum is a good plan. There have been many times I needed the second saw to cut myself out of a pinch or something went wrong with a saw right in the middle of the day and I was able to continue on with the second saw.

but seriously, Im of the opinion that the three saw plan is almost a minimum. If only just for fun, havin a few saws to choose from changes things up a bit, and certainly gives more options. a 40cc for limbing, a 50-60cc for light felling/bucking, 70+cc for big stuff/smiles :saw:

That is about 1/3 of my collection. Only bought one saw this week and 2 last week.

    Must have multiple saws!
Don't do all that much cutting, a few cords / yr.
All of my saws were used or given to me, never had a brand new saw.

I also have a Stihl 029 18", for the bigger stuff.
A Husky 36 14" for smaller wood and limbing.
A McCulloch 16" electric with a chainsaw buddy for small branches.
A Homelite XL 16" top handle.
An old Remington SL-11 24", came with my house.

I have 3 but normally only use 2. Gonna get a top handle for good old number 4. My 70cc doesn't get a ton of use, but it sure is nice to have when it's needed..

Oh, you need 2 saws. A little one and a big one. Once you get those you realize your big one is really a medium one so you get an actual big saw and now you have 3. But wouldn't it be nice to get one smaller than your small one that is REALLY light? After that you run into a couple of deals you can't pass up. And so it goes....

I've got this many, plus a few others. I also have an 029 Super, but after running a nice pro grade saw, it's torture running that thing. But, I cut a lot of wood with that old $100 saw. :)

2 is a must. 50cc and 70cc works well for me, but I like to try them all out for a bit so usually an extra one or two in the stable.

Smaller than 50cc and it collects dust as I find it is light enough to go all day with. I've never run bigger than a 77cc and haven't had the need.
