So I bought a 661c PHO on another site over the weekend. According the tracking # she was supposed to be here on Monday the 5th, but she got here today. No complaints there!! She is a real looker, I bet she runs even better. I am waiting on a few longer bars to show up now that I ordered, should be here 1st part of next week.

So after I got done drooling all over the 661c. I thought I would head to my "local" Stihl dealer to get a few things. Nothing is close where I live, it's just over an drive one way from here, to the "closest" dealer.

Get to the dealer, talked to the shop guy for a minute, he was making a new chain in the back, I thought what the heck I wanna watch, usually they dont let people in the shop but he said I could go back there and out of the corner of my eye, I spot what I think is a o44 I go over for a closer look sure enough it's a o44, and pretty nice looking also.

I figured it was a costumer saw, this place NEVER gets trade ins, I stopped asking! So we start heading back up to the front, just for kicks I asked the shop guy whats up with the o44, he said I have no clue been sitting there a few days. Go ask the owner.

I go find the owner he says he took it on trade a few days ago from a local farmer who bought it new for firewood, traded it for a new 362c. Not sure if there is anything wrong or not, sounded like the guy just wanted a new saw. He said we just haven't had anytime to look at it.

I ask him you wanna sell it out right, not really he says we never get those larger pro saws, I'd like to go over it and put it on the shelf for sale, those saws are in demand, guys really like them! Tell me about it, I said, shoot me a price, as is right now, you dont have to pay your tech to go over it.

He shoots me a price. I asked do you mind if I pull the muffler cover to see what shape the p&c are in 1st before I commit, he smiles and said now you wanna inspect it first, at the as is price, the price may go up the more "we" find out about it. I think he was joking,,,

So we pulled the cover, looks clean a little carbon build up, but no scoring . I pulled the gas cap, gas smelled nice not old. I asked do you mind if I try to start it, he smiled again,, 1st you want a "as is" price, then you wanna take parts off to look it over, now you want to start it, great he smiled you get 3 pulls to make up your mind, before the "as is" price goes up. ;)

So I give it full choke two pulls it pops, I flip it to half choke, one pull it fires up and I bump the throttle and she idles, I just smiled and shut it down, told him I'd take it for the "as is" price you told me, he smiled and said OK. He said remember it's "as is" I would at the very vac & pressure test it for leaks, hate to melt that nice p&c over a cheap seal.

Here are a few pics, I checked the serial # it is a 10mm saw. Call me whatever names you want, but I think I more jazzed up over the 044 tonight then the 661c ;) ;)

Sorry for the long post, I knew you guys would understand :) It came with a 20' bar & chain.

Since you are so happy with your 044 score, send me that 661 you almost forgot about. I'll be a gentleman (for once) and even pay the shipping plus $50 for your trouble of finding it for me.

    Oh yeah, BTW, yousucksign.gif .

Sometimes it's not the saw itself but the backstory that makes the machine most interesting. Nice Score!

I hear you, it's not the destination, but the journey of how you get there that is the fun part! I also enjoy the trip more then the, end of the line.

Thing is I knew the 661 was coming, the 044 was a total surprise!!

I am not one to kiss and tell really,

I mean, he didn't give it away he knew what he had, but was fair with me I think for as nice as it is, I gave 3 bananas for it.

I think that is fair for a running o44, I have that almost in my project one, and it's not even running yet.

Is that a 661c that got out before the recall by chance...?

Where did you get a 661 via internet? I tried to get a 661 from a couple of local Stihl dealers and was told they weren't available in our area for the "foreseeable future." :(
I settled for a new 660 rater than the 661 M-tronic. Ya wanna trade? I've not even run it the brake in period yet.;)

Love that 044! Great price to for a 'runner'. If the p/c looked good & it fired and idles it can't need much if anything. Good score.

Guys on other forums are selling them off - several new and barely used ones recently. I wanted a 661R which I couldn't get in this area, so I bought a new one off a guy from another forum. It showed up Wednesday, and then another good opportunity presented itself and I ended up trading it off less than 24 hours later without even taking it out of the box!!

Your local dealers might be feeding you a line of BS simply because they want to reduce their 660 inventory. The state of KY has the same distributor as IN which is Bryan Equipment. I've talked to two of my local dealers who said they can get the 661 and quoted me prices. We just can't get the "R" version in this part of the county which is normal, pretty much like that on all models that have an "R" option.

I got it on one of the other saw forums, I think there has been 3 or 4 listed and sold. I grabbed this one.

I agree with NewToStihl, about a line of BS, the week before last I called some dealers around here, most of them told me what you heard, not available, I asked them to call their distributor, as other people out there have them, so they are available.

Yep sure enough, after they called the distributor, they called me back with a price and said they are in the warehouse, you were right we can get you one.

I think they were just being lazy, or wanted to sell a 660 they have on the shelf. I was going to call the dealer back, who shot me the lowest price and get one ordered, then this saw pop'd up, it didn't even have one tank of gas ran threw it yet, I saved some coin buying it slightly used, and didn't have to pay taxes on it. Overall I am happy with it!

Will see what it like, once I get it in some wood :)
