Can someone describe the process for getting the rail set up and level? What items make this easier? I've got a ladder.

No I haven't. I am getting the 066 back from another member here today. He went thru it completely to get ready for the torture involved in chainsaw milling. It needed a new seal, oiler gear, and a few other small things.

I have some cherry and ash down at my gun club that will be the first victims of me and the mill once i get some chains. I'll get pics.

For years most of the time I've used a straight 2 x 12 doug fir, with foot long pieces of 1/4" x 1.5 x 1.5 angle iron on both lower edges to keep it straight.Occasionally used a piece of aluminum extension ladder or a shorter plain 2 x 8 or 2 x 10 when just having a few boards to mill.Never saw the need to spend another $150+ on those factory aluminum guide rails,I'll use the cash for other stuff.....:D

I use half of an aluminum extension ladder. I drilled a few holes in the steps and run a short lag into the log. You can put a 4' level across the ends on both sides to make sure your first cut is straight.

Watched Vids and feel stupid.
Step 1. Screw ladder to log.
    Step 2. Mill log.

now I wish I didn't sell my 32' ladder a while back! It would've been great for 16 foot cuts.

I still have a 16, 24, and 28 but again, selling something bites me back
