I'm sure someone beat me to it . . The chimney got cleaned last weekend. I wire-brushed and repainted the stove top the same weekend. She's running on a kindling and small oak log fire to season it all out. It's 60 something outside, windows and doors open, and she's smoking away. fuming really, not much smoke . . . It's also good to see it all working after a good disassembling and cleaning. One more thing to check off the list of wood stove prep items.
I'm ready to go. Cleanings were done late May. Some chunk wood has been brought up to the deck. I'll brings splits to the deck once this tropical air is gone.
I will get my pipe cleaning done in the next couple weeks. Ranch style house so access is easy, safe and doesn't take long. I know the stove is ready so will be all systems go then. Don't usually have our first fire till sometime in the month of October. Looking forward to some nice fall weather! Sent from my SM-S536DL using Tapatalk
House temp was 62 when I got home from the GTG. I waited though until this morning to light a fire. Felt good. Still 75 in here.
If I bring any wood up to the house yet the weather will go back to 90+. Reailisticlly still looking at a month and a half until we light a fire. Looking forward to the cooler weather, less bugs and the burning months ahead.
All I have to do in preparation of the first fire is to hobble up onto my roof and give the pipe a quick brush. The stacks under my deck have been replenished since the spring, with a mix of ash, apple, cherry, oak and maple. Judging by the extended forecast, my first fire won’t be until October.
Last year, our first fire for heat was the day after labor day. It was 50's or low 60's all night, and cloudy rainy 60's all that day. I have zero problem keeping the building itself warm (not just the air mass inside), so we had a smallish fire to take the chill and drive the humidity out. Same as Eric, I reckon we won't need a fire for a couple more weeks.
I'm ready. I have about a months worth of wood in the basement so I just need to pack in the typical 2.5 cords when the weather cools down.
Unfortunately I’m not ready! Usually there should be 5 cord where all this junk is. I gotta get my azz in gear!
I'm not sure when we started burning the year we started (2008-09?) but once we started burning shoulder season wood, the earliest we start is Sept 15. When we have a warmer fall, we start on September 25, this year I would like that to be October 1. It seems like our springs are colder so it would be nice if we had 3 or 4 face cord of pine left, that should save on more hardwood. We have a total of 15 face cord of shoulder season wood up, when we started we would only burn 6 face cord of shoulder season wood and last year was the most we've burned, 12 face cord that ended up saving just under 5 face cord of hardwood. We also have the pellet stove, usually I stop at burning between 50 to 60 bags (most are used at night instead of the wood stove) but last year we burned 70 to 73 bags. Since we saved on hardwood last year, we can burn more this year if we get a real cold winter. I think our hardwood inventory count is 59 to 60 face cord with another 2 face cord up on some hills.
