What did you guys use to fill the gaps around the exhaust that exits the house on the outside?

I went out to make sure exhaust was clear from snow and noticed black soot on the vinyl siding. Also see I didn't fill around the exhaust with anything on the outside.

The inside I filled with high temp caulk but I remeber I ran out. That stuff had to be ordered.

I don't think anything caulk related will dry in these cold temps unless the exhaust heats it.

black soot is likely NOT a sealing issue, rather, cleaning of the pipe and stove, OR the quality of your pellet

I did a quick cleaning of the house stove a couple days ago but it seemed that the flame on anything but #2 was getting a little lazy. Yesterday I unloaded some pellets into the house and noticed the screen on the exhaust cap was nearly plugged with soot. Did the LBT but that didn't do a 100% fix so I have to go back in the stove and clean it a little better.

The last couple of weeks I've been using Marth hardwood pellets because they are easy get at my local Fleet Farm but they are hardly my favorite pellet… way too ashy. All that soot confirmed that the stove is plugged with ash…

Yeah I changed over to Greene Team Platinums. They are hardwood and I noticed they are more ashy but much hotter. I had to clean the furnace a week after burning them. About 10 bags and there were fines EVERYWHERE. So much the fines on the side caught fire and we're just burning. I saw that and cleaned it after cool down. The ash in the furnace was nice cream color though.

I am going to try the LBT, I also have 1/4" mesh screen on the end cap that looks sooty. I'll remove the mesh as it could be causing buildup. The manual said 1/4" was ok but nothing smaller

Took it off just now! Thanks.... Here are some pics before I took off mesh. It was lightly covered, it was not much. I did follow specs in manual regarding distance off ground and away from house!
Looks like I siliconed the end cap so it's not budging when I twist it. You can see in the last pic:doh:

I was watching the exhaust, looks like it hits the floor and bounces back up:picard:

Well it is almost legal.Yep exhaust hitting ground and bouncing back.I would not like that.At very least if you put a straight vortex cap on it would probably cure the soot on house problem 99%.If was mine I would prob go up and then away from house. And plenty of heat to dry any caulk, but you may have to scrub to make it stick.

That termination is above the potential snow depth for your area?

I don't like the color of that ash.....way too dark. Sure looks like not enough comb. air.

    Anyone else have a comment?

    Agreed, looks too dark.

It also does not look like it is at least a foot away from the house. Maybe just the angle of the picture though.

You need to increase your burn air (open damper) That is a dirty burn, caused by to little air.

As for the clearance? I would want to be higher than that. At the minimum, I would add a 1 ft horizontal piece and add a jet cap (shoots straight out).

I added a 45° to angle mine down, but that's because it is over 6ft off the ground.

If that termination was at my house it would be under 3 feet of snow right now.

It was cleaned not too long ago, it could be the residue from cleaning. Too short and low in my book.
