We had to have part of our hearth rebuilt, and finally settled on slate for the center tiles. Which was a miracle cause we couldnt find anything we both remotely could agree on. It's a natural slate so not perfectly smooth, so could pose a slight issue setting the stove.... oh well.

For those of you who used slated for/in your hearth, did you seal it? The lady where we bought the slate talked about/somewhat recommended it. Maybe just to sell the sealer, not sure...

I’d seal it, it will have a richer color most likely, but more importantly it will be much easier to clean.

I sealed our slate when I made our hearth. Not hard to do and does bring out a richer color and is easier to clean. I would do it.
